ISIP

Hey OYFA!

Take a breather and relax. Read up on some pop culture and other tidbits in this week's ISIP Corner!
A-List Beauty with a MessageSharon Leal
Tomorrow - February 29 - marks the end of Black History month. As such, we'd like to finish off with something meaningful. Sharon Leal is American actress of Filipino and African-American descent. One may think that "A-List Beauty" is synonymous with diva, hotshot, and/or show-off. However, that is not the case with Leal. Visit the website - linked above - to receive a message from Leal about women of substance and humility.
Military StrongJapan to Supply Philippines with Military Equipment
In January, Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the Philippines and paid respects to different war memorials. Such a visit has proved well for increased relations between the two countries. Now, the Philippines is expected to sign an accord with Japan in order to fill the gaps within the underfunded Philippine military's capabilities. Do you think this is a ploy to beef-up defense and/or to target nearby nations? Is this a good idea? If your a foreign affairs major or just interested in this topic, let us know what you think about this development.
Go GreenPhilippines to use Solar Power
We've all heard the slogans "Go Green" and "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," and we normally tend to ignore such phrases. However, they seem to have  point. Energy-conscious company - Solar Philippines - has devised a project that will build "solar farms" across the three islands of the Philippines. This project is expected to hold up to 500 MW of power. Currently, at a 30 year standpoint, the project will offset about one million tons of carbon dioxide. Pretty cool and economical, huh? Don't you agree? Check out the article above to learn more about this project. Should we do the same here in the U.S.? Let us know what you think.

Madonna Messes UpAuthorities' Disapproval Over Flag Stunt
Last week, American mega-star, Madonna, was criticized for disrespecting the Philippine flag during a concert in Manila. Despite the roaring-crowd's approval, authorities were not amused. Now authorities are calling on future to event planners to prevent such a disaster in the coming future. Read the article above to see what the debacle is about; government officials are not the only ones angry, other religious figures are angered as well.
Speaking of the Philippine FlagPhilippine National Anthem
Click on the video to listen to the Philippine National Anthem: Lupang Hiniran The video has lyrics - both in Tagalog (Filipino) and English - so you can follow along and understand. Check it out!
Hope you enjoy! As always, hit us up if there is a specific topic you would like for us to cover!

Peace,

I highly suggest you go THIS year, some surprise guests are pretty awesome.

Featured OYFAN: Jimmy Wang

Name: Jimmy Wang

Graduation Year: 2019

Major: BME? Civil? Econ? Not really sure yet, it changes every other day.

What do you plan to do post-grad: Move back into the city, I've never lived in the countryside until I got to UVA.

Favorite OYFA Memory:  Culturefest and the after party. Got to bond at the practices and party and met a lot of OYFAns outside of my family. The practices were super hype, and I got to pie my big at the end.

What is your dream car: Ford F-150 5.0L V8 I love pickup trucks, my low key dream is to roll down the windows and blast country music while driving down empty roads. A V8 is the only acceptable engine for such a monster car.
