Global Connection

This week I was asked to provide prayers and a sermon for a church in America, for their online worship service. Whilst recording these things at home i was struck by the image of connections reaching all over the world, a bit like the picture above.
The current situation, it seems to me, has given us the opportunity to forge a spiritual communion that spans the globe. That sort of connection offers us the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, prayers, more widely than ever before, with more people accessing these resources. We can share in the Joy, Peace and Blessings of churches and spiritual groups all over the world. We can forge links that we can learn from, and in return offer insights to, a flow of spirituality lighting up the networks.

I know many people feel that being online is not the same as meeting up in person and that's true. As humans we miss the physical contact of others, but it can still be incredibly spiritual. It can still have a huge impact and on the plus side it allows those who would not be happy walking into a church, to worship in the comfort of their own surroundings. It frees us up to dip in and out of a service or worship style, to try on new ideas, new ways of worshiping, without any pressure.

The Covid19 Virus might just be the best thing that has happened to churches for some time. It has forced many inward looking churches to have to reach out, it has done away with cliques, with people feeling they don't fit in with the crowd, it has freed us all to explore our spirituality in a way we would never have thought possible before.

Yes, these are difficult times, with the poor and the vulnerable in particular struggling, but this will pass. When it does I hope we do not lose this new outlook, this new vision of what it is to be church, these global connections formed from necessity. I for one think that the world is better together.
