Paper on carers rights published on Carers NSW website
A paper by Professor Luke Clements exploring the struggle by unpaid carers for recognition as 'rights holders' has now been published on the Carers NSW website. The paper, entitled Does your carer take sugar: the parallel struggles of disabled people and carers for equal treatment, was delivered to the Carers NSW Biennial Conference in March 2013. The Gender Centre support for over 55's
The Gender Centre's new Over 55 Support Service offers non-medical support to older transgender persons as well as their carers and service providers. Click here for more information.
New program for carers of people with a mental illness
Carers NSW has a new program for carers of people with a mental illness in the Hunter area and Randwick / Botany Bay. Mental Health Respite: Carer Support provides carers of people with a mental illness with one on one support and access to counselling, education, respite and opportunities to take a break. Call the Carer Line for more information.
A number of events are scheduled for the summer, starting with The Sunnyboy in Newcastle on 28 November 2013 (flyer). Other future events will be listed on the Carers NSW website.
Employment-focused carer support
Employment-focused Mental Health Respite: Carer Support provides intensive support to carers of people with a mental illness in Randwick and Botany Bay Local Government Areas (LGAs) to help them participate in employment, volunteering and education. NDIS Bill prepares NSW Government services for transition
On 20 November 2013, the NSW Parliament passed the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NSW Enabling) Bill 2013. The Bill facilitates the transfer of government-run disability services to the NGO sector by 2018. Click here to read the media release or here to view the Bill.
Housing shortfall projected in NDIS launch sites
The Summer Foundation and Price Waterhouse Coopers have released a report which indicates that housing supply issues may impede the re-housing of young people in nursing homes under the NDIS. Click here to read the report.
