The Russian people’s fondness for chess is known, so much so that it is a compulsory subject in schools. Either for this reason or because of a natural predisposition, most of the great chess geniuses were born in Russia or in some of the republics that made up the USSR. Mikhail Tal, Petrosian, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, were world champions who came from there.

In January 2020, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation along with the University of Extremadura proposed the idea of commemorating the V Centenary of the expedition of the first round the world, in relation to the imperial policy of the emperor, holding a course at the monastery of Yuste, where experts and students were invited to reflect on the meaning of that event. The course was held online from 21 to 25 September 2020.
