Opportunity to become a Member of the Strategic ESIF Area Committee

The Heart of the South West area has been allocated around £116m from the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme for England (2014-2020).

These funds will be crucial in helping us achieve our vision of jobs, growth and prosperity for the Heart of the South West.

We are now working with partners to establish our LEP Area ESIF Committee. This vitally important body will be responsible for the strategic development and delivery of the Heart of the South West EUSIF strategy and programme.

The committee will ensure that local strategic aims are considered alongside national strategic and operational objectives.

It will ensure that maximum impact is achieved through the Funds, thereby contributing to delivery of the overall national Operational Programmes.

It will also be responsible for ensuring operational delivery of activity supported by the funds, overseeing the development of an appropriate pipeline of proposals, agreeing investments and monitoring performance against targets at the LEP level.

Chris Garcia, Chief Executive of HotSW said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to support the Heart of the South West area. The role of Committee Member will be vital to the future success of the LEP, the EU programme and the area as a whole.

"The position offers a unique, challenging and fulfilling opportunity for people with relevant experience and who are representatives of the many different types of organisations that are based within the HotSW area.”

£2.84m investment package for the Heart of the South West

The Heart of the South West (HotSW) LEP is pleased to have secured a £2.84m funding package from Government for transport schemes in Somerset.

The funding is an addition to the recently agreed Growth Deal worth £270m.

The schemes will support the Hinkley Programme, a LEP initiative to capitalise on the construction of Hinkley Point C and the economic opportunities arising from it.

They include:
  • a new access to Taunton railway station from the Taunton Northern Distributor Road which is currently under construction;
  • enhancement of the forecourt at Bridgwater Railway station;
  • strengthening of the highway route leading to Hinkley Point C in order to make it fit for the increased traffic;
  • provision of a cycle route between Cannington and Combwich in order to facilitate cycle access to Hinkley.

Business engagement in the Heart of the South West

Local businesses will soon be able to find out more about what HotSW is doing to help businesses throughout the area.

The aim is to improve how we communicate with our stakeholders and a number of business groups have agreed to help.

A lot of what we do is strategic - championing priorities with government, developing partnerships and attracting funding.  As a result, the subsequent benefits to business are not always obvious.

The recent appointment of Heidi Hallam, Partnerships Manager for the LEP, should help to improve this.  Heidi wants to meet with a variety of business groups and discuss how we can improve our engagement with local businesses.

If your business group would like to talk to Heidi about this, please email
