Happy 2021 and welcome to our 450th anniversary year!

In this edition of In the Loop we introduce an exciting new programme of 450th  anniversary events and activities, along with some highlights from Michaelmas Term that you might have missed.

On our Facebook page, we announced a new series called 450 Years in 12 Objects – a curated story that will unfold over social media over the next 12 months. These objects will be used to explore the College’s history told by Fellows and guest academics. We also announced the first two 450th Anniversary events which will happen over Zoom. Booking for our January events is now open and we hope many of you will join us for our first alumni events of this special year.

We were delighted with the enthusiastic response to our autumn virtual alumni events series and are thrilled to start this most important of years with two unmissable virtual events celebrating Jesus College in print. Both these events will take place over Zoom and are free, although advance booking is still required.

We are excited to introduce our flagship social media project for our 450th anniversary year – a digital exhibition of 12 Objects from the past 450 years. We asked a team of expert contributors, led by Helen Morag Fellow Professor Paulina Kewes and College Archivist Dr Robin Darwall-Smith, to curate a series that would tell our College’s rich and vibrant story.

Jesus is a fusion of our past and present, as well as our future aspirations, so likewise, we will consider these objects in relation to how they can speak to us today, glancing across centuries, rather than placing them in a linear history. We hope that this series will, in the Reithian tradition, inform, educate, and entertain you, with the history of our College and community, as we look forward to our next 450 years.

From our YouTube channel, we bring you two highlights from our Michaelmas events programme.

Our Character is on the Ballot: Reflections on the U.S. Election is a panel discussion that took place in November with contributions from Jesus alumnus James Goldston (1986, PPE), President of ABC News. The topics covered in this video are still just as relevant as we get closer to Inauguration Day in the United States.
In this video alumnus and author Joseph Hone (2012, English), introduces his first book of narrative non-fiction, The Paper Chase: The Printer, the Spymaster, and the Hunt for the Rebel Pamphleteers. This book is now available to purchase from Blackwell’s and examines the scandal caused by an anonymous pamphlet being distributed in eighteenth-century London.

Finally, on Instagram, we share our most liked photos from winter.
