Campus Update

Hey, bidder bidder!

As of today, the Gala's online auction is live! Don't miss your chance on some fabulous items, all from the comfort of your computer screen or mobile device. Also, you don't need to babysit your computer if you have a max bid in mind. The online auction software allows you to set a max bid, enabling "proxy bidding" which will incrementally increase your bid if you are outbid until it reaches your maximum bid limit as needed. Here are just a few of the hot items:
  • Don't let Cupid catch you by surprise this year. Valentine's Day is just 10 days after gala, and we're here to help. Shop gifts for the men and women in your life—including jewelry, restaurant gift certificates, golf gear, and even a Valentine's Day dinner package from Fresh Market.
  • Birthday parties—you're going to throw them anyway, so let us help with the planning. Is there a future athlete in your household? Check out the flag football or lacrosse parties offered by our own NCS coaches. Sports aren't your child's cup of tea? How about a Princess Tea Party at Sweet Donkey? Or a limo ride to and from school for up to 6 kids on your little one's special day?
  • Student art is always a fan favorite. ECP1-8th grade students created one project per grade, and every student added his/her mark to the piece. This year, the Upper School collaborated on one beautifully unique painting. We include these items on the online auction so all parents have an opportunity to shop.

Last Friday, January 13, the Upper School SCA held the first annual Upper School Volleyball tournament under the direction of Varsity Volleyball Coach Terri Craig. The tournament was held right after the Varsity Boy's Basketball team defeated Covenant in the game gym.

You could win $1,000!

With re-enrollment comes a great give-away, and this year, we've made it even better. Not only have we increased the amount of tuition credit to $1,000, but now 5 lucky families can win! On January 25, immediately after Dr. Proctor's state of the school address, re-enrollment opens through our school intranet platform, onCampus. All you have to do is fully re-enroll your student(s) on or before February 8 (that means all i's dotted and t's crossed—and deposits received), and you'll automatically be entered into the drawing.

This year, we are also introducing Smart Tuition, an online bill-pay system built into onCampus for families. No more stamps! All school bills will be available for payment online. You'll receive instructions on how to take advantage of this highly requested new feature in the coming days, so be on the lookout.

Academic Update

Fair Weather Friend

Today the Lower School's fourth and fifth-grade classes had a special visitor to give them insight on the weather: Chief Meteorologist at WDBJ-Channel 7 in Roanoke Brent Watts came to explain about the ways in which weather scientists measure things like precipitation, wind, and other variables in our environment—even demonstrating a weather balloon. The kids were captivated and had many question which Mr. Watts was more than happy to answer. We appreciate him taking the time to give our students this unique opportunity.

DeHart Speech: Areej Hashmi

Today's DeHart presentation given by Areej Hashmi ’17 explained the religious origins of Muslim women's dress and the truth about their role in Islamic societies. It is not what is often perceived by Americans as oppressed or unequal. Prescribed in the Koran, the burqa and hijab (head scarf) most Muslim women wear is so that women will be recognized by men for their minds and not their bodies. She gave an excellent presentation. Areej was introduced by her younger sister, Mahum Hashmi.

Not your Average Spanish Class

Ever wonder what gets accomplished when you have Spanish every day? A lot—and in many different ways! This week, we pictorially guide you through some activities our estudiantes Españoles have been up to this week—thanks, in part, to our visiting Argentinian chaperone and students, and our Upper School Mandarin instructor. There's even a video!

Arts Update

Upper Schooler Has the Write Stuff

We want to give a standing ovation to Victoria Riego de Dios ’19 (shown left, during her performance in this weekend's Henry V) for her winning submission to Mill Mountain Theatre's (MMT's) young playwrights competition, Write Stuff! Her play is entitled: "A Letter Explaining Everything," illustrating the trials and tenacity of a young friendship between two girls. MMT’s contest website states: Write Stuff! provides an opportunity for burgeoning middle and high school playwrights to see their words come to life onstage. A collection of short plays, selected by a panel of readers, will be produced in a staged reading format and performed by Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students on the Waldron Stage on February 4. We hope North Cross will attend to support the efforts of these young artists, especially our very own!

Band Students Hit a High Note

Middle School students (7 of whom are pictured above, from left to right: Malek Thabet, Daniel Byrnes, Genny Chandel, Chase Daniel, Jessica Helmer, Mashall Rasul, Connor Erwin) auditioned for the All-District Band on Saturday at Glenvar Middle School. We had 11 students make it again this year! Band Director Jimmie Donnini noted: "These students scored – as a collective group – higher than we ever have before. We have 6 in the First band and 5 in the Second band." This is the first time having 6 in Symphonic! This is also the first time having a First Chair player in Symphonic and a First Chair player in Concert in the same year.

The top scores are placed into two bands - Symphonic (first band) and Concert (second band).

The Upper School production of Henry V will be held tonight and tomorrow night in the Fishburn Auditorium at 7:30pm and is free and open to the public. Upper School and Middle School students had the chance to watch a preview yesterday and everyone was very impressed. It's no small feat. Zack H'Doubler ’17 leads the cast in the title role.
