Dear Friends of Allison Rimm and Associates,

Do I dare say that it looks like the warmer temperatures may finally stick around for a while?  And the entire nation is breathing a sigh of relief after the triumphant return of the Boston Marathon after the great tragedy our city endured last year. Getting past the long winter and the safe running of this year's Marathon, it feels as if we can finally exhale and embrace the transition to a new season and new possibilities.  

This month, I'd like to share some strategies for creating some space to breathe and finding the courage to pursue a dream. What would you do if you weren't afraid? Isn't it time to get going?

Buying Space and Peace of Mind for 75¢

In my own quest to stay grounded, centered, and focused on what's most important, I recently attended a yoga retreat. One of the themes of the weekend was using our breath to create space. The instructor then suggested that we look for opportunities to create space for ourselves once we left that haven and returned to the hustle and bustle of daily life.  It wasn't long until I found my first opportunity.

On one typical work day, I was dashing from appointment to appointment with a little less buffer time between each one than I'd like.  I arrived with just a few minutes to spare for a meeting with a senior surgeon in a very busy local medical area.  My prayers answered, a parking space opened up just as my car neared. Whew! I would make it on time.  

As was my habit, I started to figure out how much time to put on the meter - 10 minutes until my meeting was set to start, 30 minutes for the meeting itself, another 10 to get back to the car, plus another 15 minutes just in case things ran a little late.  Then my yoga instructor's voice rang in my ears and I pumped in a few more quarters leaving a full hour of extra time on the meter just to create that space he was talking about.

The surgeon rushed in from the operating room and apologized that he would only have 50 minutes to meet before he'd have to return to the OR.  We'd only been scheduled for half an hour!  I took a deep breath and smiled to myself as I remembered putting the extra quarters in the parking meter. With that small investment of an extra 75¢, I had bought myself the space I needed to absorb that extra time with the surgeon.  Not having to rush back to the street where meter maids walk the steady beat, I was free to put my full attention to the matter at hand.  And I didn't have to rush the executive who wanted to talk about a challenge he was facing that day when that meeting ended.  And, I enjoyed thinking about how easy it was to create that bit of space that allowed for wonderfully productive time with my clients.  It was the best investment I've made in a very long time.

What can you do to create a little space to breathe in your day?  You just might be surprised at how good it feels.

Ask the Coach: Taking the Leap

Question:  I have been at the same job in the same company for 30 years. I have lost my interest and drive, but yet I am terrified of taking the leap.  My biggest concerns are financial security and health insurance. I have come to grips and have analyzed my financials and realize that while I may make less, I can make that adjustment. But I cannot get past the fact of losing my very good health insurance or paying gobs of money on the individual health insurance market.

Can you give me any advice or tips on how to handle this side of making the move?  Tom

Answer:  Thank you for your question, Tom.  Making a change of this magnitude is usually quite daunting, especially after so much time in one job.  Take a deep breath and look at your fears one at a time.  First, it appears that you are considering striking out on your own as you reference buying insurance on the individual market.  I always advise my clients to quantify whatever it is they are afraid of so they can know exactly what they are dealing with. When was the last time you looked at the cost of individual insurance policies?  The Affordable Care Act was supposed to create affordable options.  Have you looked into the prices of policies in your state?  It may not be as expensive as you feared.

But let's say it is very expensive.  How much extra money would you have to make to cover the cost?  Can you create a strategy to do that?  

Have you considered other strategies for leaving your current job that wouldn't leave you without coverage, such as looking for similar work in a new company or even a new industry where your new job would have great benefits?  You also don't need to have "all or nothing" thinking.  It may be possible to scratch your entrepreneurial itch and still have a part time job that would provide you with health care coverage.

My advice to you is to think about what you want to do next, career-wise.  Then break down what you need to earn to cover your costs.  Once you are clear on the magnitude of the issue, you will be in a much better position to develop strategies to meet your financial needs.  You may just discover that if you find work you love, you'll find renewed enthusiasm and the energy needed to put in the extra time it may require to earn the money you'll need.  

One thing is clear. Only when you fully understand the problem, will you be able find a solution.
