Thanksgiving Sunday

For quiet reflection ... read  Maya Angelou & President John F. Kennedy

"Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good.”

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
Scripture Lesson    Matthew 25:31-46

2021 Stewardship Campaign Update

Thank you to all who joined our Celebratory Grab & Go last Sunday.
As of 11/18/20 our Congregation has responded with gratitude to our annual Stewardship Campaign submitting 156 pledges totaling $451,932 or 79% of our 2021 goal of $570,000!
Now, the focus of the stewardship team will move to following up on all outstanding pledges in order to close the gap between our current results and our target of $570,000.  We hope that those who have yet to pledge will do so this week, enabling us to achieve our goal. Pledge cards are available in pews or in the church office, or you may call or email Lynne David directly (
We would like to thank all who have joined us in pledging. Pledging is an expression of gratitude for the blessings in our life, but it also supports a very practical need to enable the Church Council to plan wisely for the use of our resources in support of the mission and ministry to which God has called us. In a typical year, nearly all (90%) of the work of the church is supported through the generosity of the Congregation. This generosity enables us to fulfill our purpose which is to study Scripture and to translate that Living Word into deeds of compassion for the sake of the earth, the human community, and all of God’s creation.
We encourage all who are able to pledge.

Youth in Mission News

Our South Church Youth collected hundreds of books to benefit Hartford area schools as well as Read to Grow, an organization whose mission is to promote language skills and literacy for children. Thank you to all who donated to make this event a success!

South Church Gleaning Ministry
The Book of Ruth in the Bible dramatizes how the Hebrew community showed compassion for the poor. Those who owned farmland, always left some of the crop in their fields at harvest time so the landless poor could come and glean the grain. Ruth gleaned in the field belonging to Boaz. They ended up getting married, and their son, Obed, became the father of Jesse who was the father of King David who is an ancestor of Joseph who married Mary! So, gleaning plays a significant role in our faith history for more than one reason.

Most recently, Rich and Cosby Gutt opened their fields to South Church gleaners.  We were able to harvest 259 pounds of eggplant and peppers for the benefit of our Hartford neighbors.  To participate in our gleaning ministry is to demonstrate the power of a compassionate heart. If you are interested in being added to the list of South Church gleaners, please email

A Note from the Treasurer
How do I pledge or make a financial contribution to South Church?
Pledge packets were mailed to those that were unable to pick one up at church on September 27, 2020. Your pledge packet includes a pledge card to be surrendered during the special drive by event on Gratitude Sunday, October 25. • Sign up for electronic giving—an authorization form is available in the church office or can be emailed to you (contact—this ensures that your gift is automatically deducted from your account and transferred to the church.
  • Download the    app from the app store or GooglePlay      and set up a recurring gift using your credit card or bank account.
  • Text your gift to 860-606-3910.

Reigning Compassion
Matthew 25:31-46 (I was hungry, and you fed me)
Thanksgiving Sunday
United Black Christians Anniversary
We gather together to ask for God’s blessing,
To live in community, seeking God’s will…*
So begins a hymn that many of us will sing during the Thanksgiving season, whether we worship on Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Eve or a Sunday before or after. We Gather Together, as the name suggests, is a hymn beloved by those of us who call ourselves congregational because it’s all about, well, congregating. Written in the 16th century in the Netherlands as a hymn of celebration of freedom from Spanish rule, it is perhaps surprising that we so often sing this in thanksgiving when it is intended as an anthem to national pride.

Note from the e-Connector Editor:

Thank you to everyone for your timely submissions to the e-Connector.  We are becoming a popular place to read about South Church and all our happenings!

In the interest of keeping the e-Connector a quick source of South Church news, we have implemented these guidelines.

1. Your submission should be no more than one paragraph. If you have more information we can include it as a link. If you want to include a picture, it needs to be in jpeg format.

2. Generally, your time-sensitive announcement is going to run for 2 weeks.  If your event does not happen for 4 or more weeks, it will be put in once we're within the 4 week window.

3.  If you have a general announcement,  e.g. looking for volunteers, church event wrap-up, or committee news, please resubmit the request to have it run for another two weeks.

If you have any questions, please email the e-Connector Newsletter Editor, Marie Ferguson at
