The Town & Gown Players present Proof

In the Town & Gown Players' latest Mainstage production, Catherine (played by Greer Caldwell), the daughter of Robert (John Olive), a brilliant but mentally unstable mathematician, tries to come to grips with her possible inheritance: his insanity, as well as his genius. After dropping out of school to care for her father, her estranged sister Claire (Vanessa Murray) shows up to help settle his affairs after his death. Suddenly, one of her father's former students, Hal (Briton Dean), is also in the mix, wanting to search through her father's papers and catching Catherine's affection. Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers. Can Catherine prove the proof's authorship while avoiding falling into the trap of her father's insanity?
Proof premiered Off Broadway in May 2000 and transfered to Broadway five months later. The play went on to win the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play. Proof was later made into a film starring Gwenyth Paltrow as Catherine, along with Anthony Hopkins, Hope Davis, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Proofruns August 8-10 and 14-17, 2014. Curtain rises at 8:00pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2:00pm on Sunday with a special talkback on Saturday, August 9 with UGA Math Department Instructor Joseph A. T&G Booth Project Special Event: Betrayal

The Town & Gown Players closes its 61st season with a special event production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal. This production will be a fund-raiser for the Sound and Light Booth Project, and all tickets are $10 at the door.
T&G once again presents a brilliant ensemble of artists for this endeavor. As they did last summer in God of Carnage, Terrell Austin, Steve Elliott-Gower, and Allen Rowell, joined this year by Michael Brewer, take the stage and create an evening of thought-provoking, fascinating theatre. Directed by veteran Gay Griggs McCommons, they bring to life one of Nobel-Prize winning playwright Harold Pinter’s most powerful and interesting plays. In Betrayal, Pinter creates a gripping variation on the classic love triangle, presenting key moments in the relationships between each of the persons in the triangle to each of the others, revealing the effects of betrayal to the audience even as the characters seek to hide them. In the words of theatre critic Michael Billington, Pinter creates this world "with poetic precision."
These talented people are no doubt who Harold Pinter had in mind when he stated in an interview with Mel Gussow, longtime drama critic for the New York Times, “ [I]t's such a delicate enterprise in the first place. All the component parts that have to come together, to be integrated: the actors, director, the design, the words, the lighting [snapping his fingers], the whole structure of the event. When it all comes together, it's thrilling."
