ICRAR

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season!

ICRAR has had a busy 2016! Just a few weeks ago we surpassed 1,000 refereed journal publications since our launch in 2009, and you might also have noticed our brand new website, launched in July.

2016 has seen 108 ICRAR staff and students come together at ICRAR-Con (see picture above) as well as our people helping construct phase two of the MWA, and beginning construction on the SKA Low Frequency testbed, AAVS1.0.

As the year comes to a close, ICRAR is now looking forward to our long term future as a part of the SKA Project and the international Astronomy, Engineering and Data Intensive Astronomy community.

Enjoy our recent highlights and news, and see you in 2017!

Congratulations Peter Hall
Our congratulations and thanks go out to Professor Peter Hall, founding member of the ICRAR Executive and the only Radio Astronomy Engineering chair in Australia. Professor Hall is retiring this month, after decades of work towards the SKA. Thank you for everything you've done for ICRAR, Radio Astronomy and the SKA Peter, you will be missed.

FATAL ATTRACTION BURNS BRIGHT BETWEEN STAR AND BLACK HOLE

An extraordinarily brilliant point of light seen in a distant galaxy, was thought to be the brightest supernova ever seen. But a group of astronomers now propose that the source was an even more extreme and very rare event — a rapidly spinning black hole ripping apart a passing star that came too close.

And finally...
An undoubted highlight of the year for our staff member (and PhD Candidate) Kevin Vinsen was hosting Think Inc's 'An evening with Steve Wozniak'. Kevin presented 'Woz' - co-founder of Apple - with a working MWA dipole at the end of their evening together, which Woz said was the best gift he'd received at an event like this!
