Recycled Fashion Show & High Tea

Save Your Best Gently Used Clothes For Our Pop-Up Catwalk:

STH’s Recycled Fashion Show Returns March 2014

Long before “repurposed” and “up-cycled” became part of Brooklyn’s hipster vernacular, STH was staging semi-annual, funky and fun, recycled fashion shows featuring your used clothing, modeled by some of your favorite dancers, teachers and students who animate the Hub.

Well, we think it is high time to link another high tea with high fashion, so hold onto your best giveaway duds until February please, when we send out the call again and begin collecting your clothing donations for our impromptu runway. Laura Livingston and Mike Durkin, of Freestyle Repertory Theater, will again be our fashion forward M.C.’s. All proceeds from this event will go toward defraying production costs of Local Produce 2014 events.

New Faces at Spoke

On Nov. 22nd, we sadly bid adieu (for now) to our amazing Managing Director, Marlena Oden, who has taken on a new job with a stem cell research firm in Manhattan. Although Marlena is irreplaceable, three new members have joined Spoke’s administrative team and they are already doing a bang-up job. Please introduce yourselves and help welcome these new faces to our Spoke family!

Dalienne Majors has been dancing in Brooklyn for over 19 years. She has taught dance and been the Director of Dance at Berkeley Carroll School as well as performing locally at Berkeley Carroll, BAX and Spoke the Hub. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School and University of Iowa Dance Programs. Dalienne currently choreographs and performs with Parents Who Dance and is joining STH as our Special Projects Coordinator.

Aubrey Snowden is a recent graduate of the Brown University/Trinity Rep MFA Program in Directing. Her extensive training includes acting and directing at the National Theater Institute, Suzuki and Viewpoints under the SITI Company in New York, and the International Symposium of Directors with La Mama in Umbria Italy. Aubrey is a founding member of Wide Eyed Productions in NYC, the youngest Arts Advisory Board member for Miss Hall’s School and is a graduate of Manhattanville College.

Maril Ortiz comes from a visual arts and dance background with a concentration in arts management. Her professional experience includes a number of arts management and consultant positions such as a project coordinator for the Brooklyn Museum, Older Adults Technology Service (OATS) and Senior Planet. She helped found Create Collective, a non-profit organization that facilitates collaborations between professional artists and community organizations.

Free Trial QI GONG Classes with Annie Reibel-Coyne

Mondays, December 2 & 9 | 11:00am -12:00pm

Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese art & science of becoming aware of our energy (Qi) and learning how to control its flow through a precise choreography of posture, movement, and breath. If this is your first Qi Gong class with Annie, the class is FREE! For more information please contact:

Like all arts groups and not-for-profit organizations in these tough economic times, STH often has our rice bowl out, asking for your hard-earned dollars to continue our community service through the arts. (PS We are always humbled and awed by your generosity too - thank you!) Yet we also feel it is important to acknowledge that there are always those much less fortunate than we are, and that we should “share the wealth” as much as possible and teach our children to practice giving, even if it is only $5 here and there. Those gifts add up, and in addition, do as much for the donor as they do for the recipient.

If you are feeling flush, and would like to contribute more this holiday season, here are three other charitable organizations Spoke works with and encourages you to join us in supporting:

The Consolation Center-Haiti (CCH) Girls School and Orphanage - providing a home, love, and education to 40 homeless young girls who lost their families due to abject poverty, cholera, and the 2010 earthquake. Donations to CCH can be made through

Brooklyn Community Housing & Services (BCHS) - working to eradicate homelessness in Brooklyn in the next decade. Donations to BCHS can be made at:

Kiva - join Spoke the Hub’s online micro-lending group at Kiva and help us help entrepreneurial women around the world support themselves and their families. Join our lending team and contribute to our lending kitty at:

Marriott Boycott Continues

STH still has no good news to report about our sorry neighbors, the Marriott hotel, so the boycott continues. For the full back story on our ongoing beef with these community destroyers, please click here. Please encourage your friends and family to support local artists this holiday season and stay at one of the many other plentiful hotels or Airbnbs in our neighborhood.
