10 Ways Women Can Dare to Grow Their Business Big

"While the number of women-owned firms is increasing faster than the national average, we see time and time again that women remain less likely to grow their firms to scale. Just 2% of women-owned firms have passed the million-dollar revenue threshold, compared to 6% of men-owned firms – and this gender gap is seen in every industry,” said Julie Weeks, President of Womenable, a consultancy focused on enabling women’s entrepreneurship.

Many women struggle with issues related to confidence that  impede their ability to scale their businesses past that million-dollar ceiling. Becky Blalock shares her own experience of rising to the very top of the male-dominated information technology industry and the experiences of others who also broke through in her book, DARE: Straight Talk on Confidence, Courage, and Career for Women in Charge.

Like other skills, confidence can be learned. Based on Blalock’s book, here are 10 skills that women entrepreneurs need in order to dare to grow their businesses big.

1.) Seek mentors and sponsors, mentor and sponsor others
Women entrepreneurs can shorten the path to success by learning from the success and failures of others. Finding entrepreneurs who will share advice is critical. Equally important is sharing the lessons you’ve learned with others.

Go beyond mentorship, find and be a  sponsor.  A sponsor is a person who uses his or her clout to open doors for you. For entrepreneurs, these doors include referrals to funders, clients, suppliers, employees and media visibility.

The Future of Women In Tech [Commentary]

Thirty years ago, U.S. colleges and universities awarded 37 percent of computer science bachelor's degrees to women. Today, when that number should be approaching 50 percent, it has actually been cut in half. Women in the United States now receive just 18 percent of computer science bachelor's degrees, and less than a quarter of professionals in computing are women.

It's true that women in technology are increasingly well known. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, and Marissa Mayer, president and CEO of Yahoo, are household names. Among Marylanders, Stephanie C. Hill, president of Lockheed Martin's Information Systems and Global Solutions-Civil product line, stands out as a rising tech star. Ms. Hill, a UMBC graduate who leads 10,000 employees in areas ranging from cybersecurity to space exploration, was recently selected as the 2014 Black Engineer of the Year at an industry conference in Washington.

Despite these women's accomplishments, their visibility still pales in comparison to the likes of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerburg and Steve Jobs. We must change that, and doing so starts with changing perceptions of who belongs in tech fields.

One of UMBC's top computer science students, Blossom Metevier, didn't take a single computer science course in high school, assuming the field was for "gamers and geeks." In college, she learned that computer science is foremost about problem solving, and that it was perfect for her.

Are You Required to Have Federal Past Performance?

When helping clients with their Capability Statements, a common question we hear at TargetGov is, “do I have to have Past Performance with the Federal Government?” This is an excellent and pertinent question, because the Past Performance section of your Capability Statement showcases your proof that you can do the work you say you can do. Because of this it is one of the key components in alleviating risk.

It is better to have Past Performance with the agency you’re trying to work with, or with the Federal Government in general because then they know that you’re familiar with their system and way of doing things. But what do you do if you don’t have any past experience with them? Keep the purpose of the Past Performance section in mind, as it will help you understand what to do.

UMBC Training Centers Awarded Contract from The National 
Geospatial-Intelligence Agency

UMBC Training Centers announced a contract award from National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). The contract has an estimated anticipated value of $3,667,373, including base and option years.

UMBC Training Centers will deliver a program of study consisting of ten geospatial analysis training courses. These courses will be structured around themes of critical thinking, spatial thinking and methodologies, and include topics such as spatial statistics, regional studies, and human geography. Utilizing Rapid Applied Learning (RAL™) – a UMBC Training Centers exclusive – this training program consists of leading instructional design approaches and emerging instructional technologies to deliver interactive and engaging content.
