Fossil Free NYC

In the past few weeks 11 cities (plus Santa Fe!) have committed to pursuing divestment from fossil fuels!  They agree it's time to stop profiting from an industry whose business model will destroy our planet; and time to reinvision our future.  We're asking our local and state legislators to join this national movement!  Please sign and share the Fossil Free NYC petition:  http://campaigns.gofossilfree.org/petitions/divest-new-york-city-from-fossil-fuels

To get involved or start your own local on-campus and off-campus divestment inititiative, including faith-based institutions, check out gofossilfree.org or contact us @ 350nyc@gmail.com; subject line NYC Divest Coalition.

Save the Date! May 13th
No Keystone XL Action

On Earth Day, we reached our goal of a million comments to the State Dept against the Keystone XL pipeline.  "Not long after we crossed the 1 million threshold, the EPA put out a statement that called the State Department's first analysis of the pipline 'insufficient,' pointing out that they got the numbers wrong on the risk of oil spills and the climate impact of the pipeline. That's a sure sign that the relentless pressure we're putting on is having an impact." Bill McKibben
Join us on the eve of May 13th to help amplify this wisdom.  Details coming soon!

350NYC White Roof Coating
May 18th (Upper East Side Manhattan)

RSVP to 350.orgnyc@gmail.com by May 10th.  Join us for some good old fashioned hands-on carbon-cutting!  Cool Roofs has lined up a roof for us and will provide all the necessary training, instructions and supplies (including pizza).  A good day's work and a little fun can make a real difference!

By coating black tar roofs with a white solar-reflective paint we immediately reduce temperatures inside and out.  It makes this low cost solution a quick and easy way to cut carbon emissions, reduce our risk of ‘brown-outs’, and save a bunch in energy costs.

This past Sunday Bill McKibben delivered a powerful guest sermon at The Riverside Church!  If you missed it you can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geIni_BwjGw
Thanks to the "Beloved Earth Community" for organizing!  And to Hannah Milnes, Sophie Lasoff, Julia Worcester, and Daniel Asselin for sharing with the community about their divestment work.  You all inspire!

Campus Divestment
Students at over 300 campuses across the country are leading the way in the national divestment movement and making daily strides. Last week Rhode Island School of Design Divest held a sit-in at their president's office and consequently were granted a meeting later this month to present their case to their Board of Trustees.  Way to go RISD!  Here at home, NYC students are working night and day on campaigns at NYU, Barnard/Columbia, Cuny, the Fieldston School and more.  NYU Divest won their first meeting last week with Administration!  Let's support their efforts!  Check out the latest on campus divest campaigns:  http://gofossilfree.org/updates/
If you missed the Earth Day premiere of "Do the Math - The Movie" you can watch it here:
