Message From the HVBA President, David Chernack

Hello bluegrass lovers!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Too Blue to the stage TOMORROW for the inaugural show of our 2022 concert season. They will be the first to play at our new venue, Poughkeepsie Day School’s James Earl Jones Theater. Too Blue has played for the HVBA on many occasions over the past decade, and there’s no other band that I’d rather have to inaugurate a new season of bluegrass music in the Hudson Valley.

The last two years have been hard on everyone, including artists whose opportunities to perform dwindled in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the pandemic is not definitively over, the HVBA will use every opportunity possible to safely supply a satisfying season of musicians in 2022. I thank you all for supporting the Association and the artists we chose to highlight at our outdoor concert series last year, and for bearing with us while we tried our hardest to make the concert season feel “normal.” I hope that you continue to patronize the arts—both at the HVBA and at the Hudson Valley’s many great venues for live music—and I hope that will continue to support us as we endeavor to bring you one of our best seasons ever.

Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you at this year’s concerts in Poughkeepsie!

HVBA Reaches Out To Children

The Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association began a series of workshops at Poughkeepsie Day School this past Monday. Split up into two groups, students in the lower school (grades PreK-4) and the upper school (grades 5-12) learned all about the origins of Bluegrass, the different instruments played, and key musicians who revolutionized the genre.

Students and teachers were able to interact with and ask questions about the instruments played: a banjo, fiddle, upright bass, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and resonator guitar. Ending the upper school meeting with the student request of “Folsom Prison Blues” was a highlight for the group. The ease of the workshop made it enjoyable for all involved and the music was an obvious bonus.

Special thanks to the musicians who made this happen: Eric Marshall (coordinator & bass), Joan Harrison (banjo), Bruno Bruzzese (fiddle), Jon Ahmadjian (guitar), Andy Bing (mando), and Walter Ensor (dobro).

This video was put together somewhat hastily for you .... just to get a feel for what the morning felt like. Do NOT blame any flaws on Fred Robbins. He was there filming, but this video is by the amateur wanna-be videographer, Lynn Lipton.

Origin of The Dobro?

New Trivia Question

This week Dick Bowden gives us a crash course on the origin of all bluegrass instruments, with the exception of the....dobro. That's for you to answer in his latest Trivia Question. Take your best shot at it.

Andy Bing Wins the March 11th Contest!!

Have you forgotten the question already? Fear not! Here you go.

David Chernack's Playlist

Modern Bluegrass Women

Two weeks ago, we listened to a playlist of the Founding Women of Bluegrass—and this week, we’re listening to a list of the women who are taking charge and moving the genre forward! Take a listen here.
One of our newest HVBA members and one of our most talented, is Kate Prascher.

"Kate Prascher is a Tennessee-born, Hudson Valley-based singer and mandolinist. She writes evocative original songs with an “intangible vintage feel” - Ink 19.

One of Kate's songs,"City of Ghosts" was released this month and it's here for you to listen to...or to buy and support her music (I just bought mine). I think you will love it and want to hear more.
This is the newest CD to arrive and we are looking for someone to review it for our website. If you are interested....just let us know!
