'Well designed student accommodation is, in our view, the key to a vibrant, living student community'

said Brian Mariotti, AJ+C Associate who led the design team

Allen Jack+Cottier has recently completed the proposed DA design of a new 20 storey, 635 bed student housing tower for Lend Lease in conjunction with Urbanest at the southern gateway to the new International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct in Darling Harbour, Sydney.
With Lend Lease, Urbanest, architects Office for Metropolitan Architecture (NL), Denton Corker Marshall and Hassell, AJ+C was part of the successful bid for the precinct in late 2012.
This will involve new exhibition, convention and entertainment centres at Darling Harbour as well as construction of a new residential, commercial and cultural precinct at the southern end of Darling Harbour where the Entertainment Centre and a car park currently stand.
Our role includes the design of two multi-storey buildings containing circa 1000 student accommodation beds. The first stage of this accommodation has just been submitted for State Significant DA and is expected to open in early 2016.

As a firm, AJ+C places design excellence at the absolute core of our practice. We design for the long term, so that the buildings we create will hold their value and beauty over time.
We recently produced a survey book on our landmark project, Moore Park Gardens, a development that has fundamentally shaped and influenced Allen Jack+Cottier’s mixed used work. If you have not yet seen a copy, ask us – it is well worth a look.
We sought the views of residents, investors, journalists, property people and business people, even the Lord Mayor of Sydney, about what makes Moore Park Gardens work as a development, and a community. The results were both surprising and gratifying – architecture critics use it as reference point, property values have strongly outperformed others in the area, there is always a waiting list to buy apartments, and most residents say they would not live anywhere else.
Many of the elements we pioneered at that time – the mix of residential, business, shops and cafes, the sense of connectedness, the wide internal streets and range of apartment types – continue to evolve in our current work. At a time when the building industry remains under pressure, we have never been busier, with major projects in design and construction phases across a whole range of sectors – mixed use, multi-residential, student accommodation, and more.
A new generation of talented young architects has stepped up to continue the design-lead excellence for which Allen Jack+Cottier has long been recognised. Expect to see some of our new work, and new faces, in our upcoming newsletters.

‘The building forms are designed to ‘de-formalise’ the usual rigid and repetitive facades common in multi-unit residential development. Often, these are identical apartment plans stacked one on top of the other, resulting in an institutional rather than organic or ‘community’ feeling’

said Mark Louw, Director of AJ+C.

In June 2013 the Planning Assessment Commission approved a modified Concept Plan for Stamford Property Services’ Macquarie Park Village (MPV) mixed use development at 110-114 Herring Road, the site of the current Stamford Grand North Ryde hotel.
Whilst Ryde Council’s draft LEP controls limits the site’s FSR to 2:1, AJ+C's proposal for a development at 2.28:1 was approved based on the quality and creativity of the design and its successful integration into the surrounding built form context.

How many of these projects for students has AJ+C designed?

Certainly, we have had loads of experience designing student housing over the years. We recently did the sums and realised we have designed accommodation with more than 6,000 beds. Our projects are located all over Australia, and overseas. Each project is unique, defined by its site, its client and the weather.

Is student housing a separate discipline within the practice, or an extension of your other multi-residential work?

AJ+C has a long history in multi-residential work, so that this is a great base. This is now a specialist market segment in its own right, however. It’s a highly competitive, dynamic marketplace where our clients know they have to produce something that is financially and aesthetically appealing, and has a real quality about it.

Macquarie Park Planning Proposal

AJ+C has completed its Urban Design Study for the Harvey Norman Group Macquarie Park Planning Proposal - a new Harvey Norman headquarters building in the suburb of North Ryde, Sydney. The development includes approximately 12,000 m² of office space, parking for 350 to 400 cars, and a new high rise residential tower. The project will transform the site, rejuvenating an existing Domayne retail store and warehouses into a vibrant new addition to North Ryde.

Matthew McNeil promoted to Senior Associate

Allen Jack+Cottier are delighted to announce the promotion of Matthew McNeil to Senior Associate Architect. Matthew joined the company ten years ago and during that time has played a key role in a number of the firm’s major projects.
Matthew has a wealth of experience in a range of sectors, including residential, student accommodation, sports and recreation, retail and heritage. In his new role Matthew will assist with project management process and policy making, in addition to his current duties as a project manager.

Maybanke DA submitted

Maybanke Alterations and Additions project is based on removing an unsympathetic flat extension and creating a new element which is clearly articulated from the existing heritage item. The forms and materials of the proposed replacement addition are designed to be clearly modern and responsive to the scale of the Maybanke with a more modest form. The intention is to improve the character of Wharf Road and conserve public and private views to the north.
