Landfill diversion of carpet waste rises
The volume of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK has shown a modest increase with 175,252 tonnes reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2018, according to Carpet Recycling UK.

This represents a diversion rate of 44% - up from 42% and an increase of 7,252 tonnes on 2017, the not for profit membership association reports.
Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK. 
Energy recovery accounted for 113,914 tonnes – 65% of the total and a reduction of 10,087 tonnes from 2017. 

Reuse and recycling of waste carpet was up by 19,338 tonnes on 2017 to 61,338 tonnes, representing 35% of the total.

Betap® Tufting B.V. is closing the loop
Carpet Recycling UK is pleased to be working with Betap on its latest Next-Gen carpets. Over the past two years, Betap has developed a single polymer carpet allowing it to be 100% recyclable and closing the loop in the carpet industry. At the Domotex 2019 fair in Hannover, Betap presented the full Next-Gen carpet by Betap® production line.

Betap guarantees that its Next-Gen products are more sustainable, with the carbon footprints of the manufacturing processes calculated using the database tool provided by Ecochain®. 
This shows that a reduction in CO2 of at least 25% and at maximum of 80%. Most products are even at a price neutral level!

Providing a complete range for industry, the Next-Gen range consists of products for domestic, exhibition, automotive, artificial grass to contract (commercial). Varying in ranges for CO2 reductions through to being fully recyclable product (depending on the actual product), Betap is leading the curve and providing products for the future.

Green Birch Environmental offers reuse and recycling of carpet waste
Green Birch Environmental (GBE) based in Doncaster, is the latest carpet recycling and reuse business in South Yorkshire.

GBE’s managing director, Neil Green explains “we’ve actually been in business for just over a year, and in that time, we’ve been working hard to build the foundations required to become a leading business offering carpet recycling and reuse of carpet tiles.” ​
Our carpet tiles are generally sold along with room sized roll ends of carpet through our shop (The Affordable Floor Store) in Doncaster, where we provide the local community and business with quality but affordable flooring.

Envirocycle London on reuse and recycling of carpet tile and carpet waste
Reuse specialist Envirocycle London reported a busy 2018 diverting over 170,000 carpet tiles from general waste streams into reuse outlets, which was a significant uplift on the previous year’s figures.​
Carpet Recycling UK presented Tony Spreckley with the Best Newcomer of the Year member award at the 2018 conference to recognise the service Envirocycle provides for demolition and refurbishment companies with the reuse of arising construction waste.

Grant funding for companies in Scotland
Our Waste Prevention Implementation Fund is currently offering grants to small and medium-sized businesses with ideas to reduce their waste, especially plastic waste.

Welcome to our new members
As well as compacting cardboard for recycling, Austins Department Store in Newton Abbot Devon is compacting carpet waste into bales with a view to reducing haulage costs and is making carpet recycling feasible for its customers.
Along with uplifted vinyl flooring and off cuts, contract flooring specialist Middlesex Flooring in Harefield Middlesex are now also diverting carpet tiles from landfill into new uses and adding recycling value for its customers.
