The Inevitable Collision of Alternate Realities

koan: Chien and her soul were separated. Which is the true Chien?

I woke the other day having had a dream about how my life could have been different.  Happy as I am with my current circumstances, a potent regret accompanied me for days after. I felt no need to drive the grief away, but questioned how I was to reconcile the difference between what is and what could have been. Praying for some star to navigate by, this koan arose to accompany me:

"Chien and her soul were separated. Which is the true Chien?"

We're fascinated by stories that offer a version of our lives other than the one we have.  The mind is a possibility machine, happily churning out expectations, regrets, plans, wishes, theories, hopes, dreams, shouldas, couldas, and wouldas.  It got us to the moon and beyond, but also leaves us feeling anxious and disappointed here on planet Earth. We humans have a dubious talent for inhabiting multiple realities. Let's bask in them together.

A Note from John Tarrant

Fire in Australia. Fire in California. The climate catastrophe is not something we are waiting for; it has arrived.

Nonetheless this is the life we have. How do we love it and be faithful to the marvelous strangeness of it, the children being born full of hope, the magpies singing the fire siren songs, the narcissus pushing up green shoots as if it is any usual spring?

What are you always thinking of, now at the beginning of the year?

What places and scenes do you love?

Join us for meditation and discovery at Santa Rosa Creek.

March Open Mind Retreat with John Tarrant
The Woman Who Led Two Lives

A koan tells the story of a woman who left home with a man and had a family and at the same time didn’t leave home but stayed in bed in the house she grew up in. “Which is the true woman?” the koan asks.

March 19-22, 2020
Bolinas, California

This residential retreat is held in a beautiful place on the ocean. It has a simple feel, and wonderful food prepared by the Commonweal caterers. There will be sitting together, koans, teachings, poetry, conversation. There will be time for writing and drawing and walking by the sea and under the cypress trees with the sound of waves and seals and whales to keep us company. We will make discoveries and our lives will open. No particular background in spiritual practice is required.

This retreat usually fills up early.
