Wellcome’s new priority on data for science and health
Artificial intelligence and data technologies are transforming research and healthcare. To ensure everyone can benefit from health data innovation, Wellcome is investing £75 million in a five-year programme on data for science and health.

University research receives funding boost
Research England has announced its budget allocations for 2019/20, providing an extra £45 million for research in English universities. The additional funding will give universities more capacity to invest in the people, partnerships and infrastructure that are essential for delivering cutting-edge research that brings real-world benefits.

NHSX goes live
Launched last week, NHSX is the new NHS body tasked with driving the digital transformation of the ‘user experience’ of the health service. CEO Matthew Gould has outlined his primary goals for NHSX now that it is up and running, which include building on the key.

Cancer Research UK announces strategic partnership
Cancer Research UK has announced a strategic partnership with SV Health Investors (SV), a leading life sciences venture capital and growth equity firm, focused on accelerating the translation of Cancer Research UK’s research and the development of new cancer medicines for patients.

Research Activity League Table released
For the first time in eight years a different trust has topped the NIHR Clinical Research Network Research Activity League Table for the highest number of studies. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust undertook the most clinical research studies with 567 supported studies during 2018/19. 

Gift Aid at record high of £1.35bn last year
The amount of Gift Aid paid out on charitable donations has risen significantly for the first time in three years. HM Revenue & Customs’ provisional data for the last financial year shows that the amount of Gift Aid claimed by charities rose to a record £1.35bn, up £90m from the year before, from eligible donations worth £5.41bn.

Join the UK Trial Managers’ Network
The network was formed over 20 years ago, and their aim has remained the same – to facilitate the development of a well-trained, highly motivated, effective workforce of trial managers within the UK health care system who will make an important contribution to the efficient delivery of high quality clinical trials.

TREND-WATCHING: Yes I Can
A cutting-edge mental health therapy program using virtual reality, called the Yes I Can project, is currently being researched in Hong Kong. Launched a few weeks ago by AXA insurance, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Oxford VR, the program aims to help patients overcome their social fears.
