Agassiz Accolades
At Agassiz, our school promise is to develop students into lifelong learners by cultivating their positive distinctions, whether they be academics, arts, or athletics. We value every member of our community and their contributions to our school. Toward that end, we are pleased to announce a new format to help recognize members of our student community.

During the 2019-2020 school year, we will publish a special Bulldog Blast once per month to share student accolades. There are many ways that students can be recognized, including:
  • Peer conferences (peer-led mediation as part of our restorative justice program)
  • IB ambassadors (student tour guides on school tours)
  • Students who lead the school morning announcements and Peace Pledge
  • Students of the Month (recognized based on IB values such as open-mindedness)
  • Athletes (can include all student participants)
  • Student Council (recognizing students for their ideas and activities)
  • Attendance (recognition for students and classrooms with high attendance by grade)
  • Positive attitude in the classroom
  • Commitment to upholding classroom and community rules
  • And more!
In September, we will rely on our teacher team to nominate students for Agassiz Accolades. Please stay tuned for additional details on ways to nominate students for Agassiz Accolades. We look forward to celebrating the many wonderful qualities our students bring to Agassiz!

Volunteer Levels - New Volunteers
In order to keep our students as safe as possible, all Agassiz volunteers must be approved by CPS. There are two types of CPS volunteers: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 volunteers must submit an online information form and provide a picture ID. Level 1 volunteers must submit fingerprints and a TB test. Any individual who provides volunteer service with students in an unsupervised setting, including field trips, must be a Level 1 volunteer. All applications are on the CPS Parent website.

Volunteer Levels - Previous Volunteers
Both Level 1 and Level 2 volunteer applications are approved for two years at a time. Any volunteer who completed their Level 1 or Level 2 volunteer application during the 2018-2019 school year will maintain the volunteer status during the 2019-2020 school year. Agassiz staff will update your volunteer record for you. You do not need to take any additional action. We greatly appreciate your service to the Agassiz community!

Volunteer Handbook
Agassiz' volunteer handbook will be distributed once the school year begins. In the meantime, please reach out to Agassiz administration with any questions (memcnally@cps.edu or mtweber@cps.edu).

Call for Parent Volunteers
Agassiz is working to expand its afterschool program options. As we continue to plan out program details, we ask all parents to please consider volunteering an hour a week or more after school to provide academic support in a small group setting. We are looking for parents who are willing to provide homework help, read with kids, lead a technology-based educational activity, or provide any other kind of academic or enrichment support at any grade level. Volunteers must have a Level 1 certification.

We rely on parents’ help to provide the best possible educational experience for all of our students. Please email Assistant Principal Michele McNally to learn more. Thank you for your assistance!

Tuesday Folders
Please note that all administrative updates communicated in the Blast will also be printed in Tuesday Folders once school resumes. This will help us ensure that all families have access to important school updates. Thank you!
New Teacher Bio

Barbara Ault, Kindergarten
Hi Agassiz families! My name is Barbara Ault, and I am so excited to join the Kindergarten team as a teacher at Agassiz, covering Ms. Swanson's maternity leave until February. I moved to Chicago from Indiana about ten years ago, after completing my Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Purdue University. While I began my career outside of the Education sector, I quickly found my life’s passion when I moved to Busan, South Korea to teach all day Pre-K at an English immersion school for one year. This was an amazing and life-changing experience, where I immediately realized that early childhood education was my calling. After completing my contract in Korea, I moved back to Chicago. Here I have spent three years teaching in private preschools, as well as two years in a Kindergarten classroom at The Catherine Cook School. I received my Master of Science in Education with an Early Childhood focus from the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2017. These international experiences have deepened my understanding of cultural sensitivity and truly given me a global perspective, as well as provided me with the tools to lead a warm, inviting classroom informed by the culturally diverse experiences that have been so valuable to my life. In my free time, I love traveling, reading, spending time with my husband and family, doing yoga, going to see music, and snuggling with my cat, Stevie Nicks. I am so thrilled to get to know all of the wonderful families of Agassiz!

School Supply Drop-Off

School supplies can be dropped off at school Thursday, August 29 from 1-3 PM and Friday, August 30 from 8-10 AM. Please bring supplies in bags labeled with your child's name and room number (Supplies do not need to be individually labeled). Supplies can be dropped off on the first floor; they will be delivered to your child's classroom.

As you may know, Agassiz was closed for most of the summer due to construction. As a result, teachers have only a short time to prepare their classrooms for the start of the school year. Please help us support our teachers by remaining on the first floor during school drop off hours.

New Parent Orientation

Agassiz administration will host a new parent orientation on Wednesday, August 28 at 6 PM at school. All new families in all grades are invited to attend. Kids may join if needed.
