ESR Launches
Bivocational Ministry Certificate
Earlham School of Religion is excited to announce the launch of a new Bivocational Ministry Certificate. This program is intended to provide pastors who find themselves working outside of their ministerial roles, either by choice or necessity, with the resources to do so successfully.

The first cohort for the program will begin in August 2019 with a retreat and two-week intensive course called Bivocational Ministry. Those who may be interested in this new certificate program include:
  • Pastors with undergraduate or graduate degrees in ministry who find themselves working bivocationally and for whom additional education would be valuable
  • Current pastors and other ministers without a theological degree, yet who are heavily invested in ministry and find themselves working bivocationally
  • Yearly meetings and other denominational groups who wish to give bivocational ministers access to practical theological education specifically related to bivocationality
  • Someone who is specifically choosing to be bivocational, including those for whom the word “entrepreneur” might fit
"Over the past few years, as I was developing a Bivocational Ministry course for ESR, I started thinking about the value of a certificate in the same topic," shared Pastoral Ministry professor Phil Baisley. "This certificate is an opportunity for students to hone their ministry skills while learning things specifically related to bivocational ministry, and to design and implement a plan for effective bivocational ministry in their present or anticipated setting."

You can find more information about a study ESR conducted on bivocational ministry here.
