Christophe Evers’ collection began 30 years ago with works of arts from Northern Nigeria and Tanzania that were still coming to the market at that time.
Over the years, he criss-crossed the Sablon, visiting all the antiques dealers in search of new treasures.
Frustrated by the lack of information on those regions, he published in 2003 a small book on The Art of the Upper Benue River; a few works in this auction were featured in that book (i.a. a Chamba figure (lot 14), a large Ga’anda ritual sword (lot 35) or a Mumuye monkey (lot 73).
His collection has expanded considerably and piece per piece up to a thousand works.
This expansion is not sustainable anymore and he has decided to auction a hundred works from Nigeria and the border regions.
While most of his purchases were directly from the Brussels-based dealers, a number of them were acquired through auction from well-known collections like Jacques Kerchache (an ikenga, lot 16), Carlo Monzino (a Bangwa figure, lot 7) or Roger Azar (an extremely rare Ekajuk janus mask, lot 26).
The Online Auction will start on March 13 until March 18, 2018.
