It provides communication and problem-solving skills for families. Results include reduced alcohol/drug use, truancy and violence in the home. Showing that we love them; that we love our children and how to fight for things that we love. The moral support from this program is very important." – K. Sandoval. Please give generously.

GUEST AT YOUR TABLE – JUSTICE ACROSS BORDERS

Guest at Your Table, UUSC’s (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee) longest-standing fundraising and intergenerational education program for congregations, has been an important part of UUSC and UU culture since 1975.  On December 2, the Social Justice Committee will have a table in the Welcome Hall for handing out collection boxes for us to keep at the dinner table (or another gathering space in our homes) for collecting loose change and bills during December.  Besides being a collection point, the boxes serve as a reminder of the work UUSC and its partners do to defend human rights around the world. This year, the donations will be used by UUSC for three aspects of the migrant challenges for Central Americans:

The right to safety in Central America
The right to safety on the migrant trail
Human rights and the U.S. immigration system.

Please return filled boxes to church in early January.  Some of you may prefer to write a check payable to UUSC - the SJC will have  UUSC remit envelopes, or you can drop a check in our weekly collection baskets.  All Guest at Your Table gifts of $125 or more are eligible to be matched dollar for dollar by the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock. This includes monthly donations that total $125 or more.  Dropping spare change daily in the collection box is a good way to keep the plight of these people in our hearts.

NEW ART EXHIBIT – CHERYL KAMPE

December 6 - January 28
Cheryl’s “Majestic Trees of Monterey County” exhibit was inspired by our local landscape and wildlife. Most recently she has been studying oils and plein air painting. “This series has been a part of my life for over 10 years. It all began when a friend sent me a wonderful photo of “Old Veteran” at Point Lobos. Using watercolor on heavy paper… I try to translate the beauty I see onto the paper.… I love the way watercolor blends wet into wet to get wonderful abstract touches to the painting.” The  Comments Book is now in the Welcome Hall just outside the sanctuary doors.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

December 14, 7:00 p.m.
2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY ~ This epic 1968 fantasy, Sci-fi
film is directed by Stanley Kubrick and written by Arthur Clark. It’s regarded as one of the most influential films of all time – and one of the most controversial. As the story goes…when Dr. Dave Bowman and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship’s computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time. It’s the 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of this masterpiece of a film…that made us feel wonderfully small! Doors open at 6:45 p.m. It’s free. Family and friends are welcome.
