A great / funny speech about why we need broader goals for education

"I shouldn't have to be ready for kindergarten, kindergarten should be ready for me," says Yong Zhao, Presidential Chair and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education, College of Education, University of Oregon.

He also says,"drugs come with warnings: this drug cures headaches, but may cause bleeding stomachs. The same should be true in education: this program will increase children's reading scores, but it may make your children hate reading forever."

What are citizenship skills and why should we care if kids get them?

These days, we worry about things like low voter turnout, the level of political discourse, and a seeming decline in our general sense of social responsibility, but we don’t necessarily link these things with how we’re educating our young people.

People for Education thinks it's time to move beyond targets for the "3 R's" in education. We need to broaden our goals for schools to include things like citizenship.

Citizenship education is not one subject; it can be found throughout the curriculum and the day-to-day workings of schools. It includes the acquisition of a core set of civic knowledge, skills, and values, including knowledge of historical and political concepts, processes and ideas, a nuanced understanding of social issues and a capacity to have a voice in one’s school and community.

Read Annie Kidder's blog on the Samara website about why citizenship skills matter.

Check out Measuring What Matters to find out how we could set goals and measure success for citizenship.

How can school communities get involved in Measuring What Matters?

Is your school working to build students' creativity, social-emotional skills, physical and mental health? Do you have a school-wide program that encourages students to practice active, democratic citizenship?

Or is your whole school working together on creating a quality learning environment through collaboration, building strong relationships and working with the community?

Then we want to hear from you!

Happy Music Monday!
