We honor how every person is made in the image of God. We believe that celebrating ethnic history and heritage months moves us beyond cultural diversity and towards a vision of the Gospel that exposes the sin of racism and leads us towards holistic redemption and restoration through the cross of Christ.
We did not belong together then—yet are called to belong together now. Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians encompass 25 million people living in America whose ancestors came from over 75 countries and cultures, many with historical tensions and conflict. From a need for solidarity and a desire to belong, “Asian and Pacific Islander” is becoming a shared identity that continues to be defined. During the time of COVID, increased hostility confronts the API community from the outside, while the struggle to be united remains inside.
The disciples who secretly gathered in the Upper Room with Jesus confronted similar hostility from the outside and tension inside. Jesus gives them room to be different because in his “Father’s house are many rooms.” Each Sunday in May, we'll hear the Gospel of John and explore the complexity of choosing to become a family by faith – as Christ teaches that our unity is rooted in the Spirit and our belonging to one another comes from abiding in Him.
