Calendar Reminders for Next Week

Monday: No “Delayed Opening”
The delayed opening listed on the printed calendar for April 25, to accommodate a full faculty/staff meeting, has been rescheduled for Friday, April 29. School will start at the regular time on Monday morning.

Monday: Lower School Spanish Festival
Parents are invited to attend the 2016 Spanish Festival on Monday, April 25 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the Carter Athletic Center. The main focus of the festival will be Spanish; but in honor of all the cultures that are part of our school community, students will perform a few dances that represent the Global Studies program. We will include a couple of languages/cultures that share common elements with Spanish.

Wednesday: International Dinner
For students in grades 8-12 and their families, the World Language Department is hosting the International Dinner from 6–7:15 p.m. in the Lemon Dining Hall. This year's theme is "Music is the International Language."  There will be good food and student musical performances.  Bring your favorite international themed dish and join us for a fun evening! For more information, please contact Nitza Fernandez-Plaski at nplaski@northcross.org or Erin Hunter at ehunter@northcross.org.

Friday: Delayed Opening
The delayed opening on printed calendar for April 25 was rescheduled for Friday, April 29. Classes will not start until 9 a.m. and teachers will be available to greet students beginning at 8:45 a.m. next Friday morning.

Help Spread Kindness

On Thursday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Fishburn Auditorium, middle school and upper school girls will join Mrs. Hamlin in a Kind Campaign Assembly. The Kind Campaign, founded by Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson, is an internationally recognized movement, documentary, and school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl "crime." In preparation for this assembly, students have been discussing the campaign with their advisories.

Parents are welcome to attend. Please contact Mrs. Hamlin at lhamlin@northcross.org if you have any questions.

Principal for the Day

Lower School Director Deborah Jessee was able to relax a bit today thanks to the help of Jed Sells. Jed was the Ellis Hall “Principal for the Day,” and his busy day started by helping with carpool this morning. Jed relaxed the dress code for the day but asked each grade to wear a special color, he extended recess, and made sure ice cream was available for purchase at lunch. Lower School students ended the day with “open time” for games or crafts.

Summer Reading Book Fair May 2-6!

Summer Reading Book Fair is almost here! The Book Fair will take place in Hancock Library May 2-6. Fair hours are Monday–Thursday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.–3 p.m. We hope you will stop by and browse the wonderful titles selected for our summer reading list. We will also have copies of the Senior Favorites from the Class of 2016, as well as the faculty and staff favorites.

Barnes and Noble is our vendor again this year for the Summer Reading Book Fair.  They are providing copies of our books as well as hosting an in-store book fair for us. We will also have a Hancock Library "wish list" table at Barnes and Noble beginning on Monday, May 2. If you would like to purchase a book for donation to the library, stop by the store and take a look— there will be a number of great new titles!

Click to download a book fair voucher with our number. If you use it when you purchase items at the store or online, we will receive credit for those purchases, too. Our Barnes and Noble in-store book fair runs from May 2-16, so there is plenty of time to stop in, browse, and perhaps make a purchase that will benefit our library. Don’t forget that purchases at the café count, too! Our Barnes and Noble Book Fair ID # is 11853827.

If you have any questions, or if you would be able to volunteer during our Book Fair, please contact Amy Holley at aholley@northcross.org or 989-6641 ext. 307.

Academic Update

Presenting in PowerPoint

Thursday morning in Fishburn Auditorium, fourth grade students in Mrs. Lawrence and Ms. Cook’s classes delivered PowerPoint presentations to an audience of students, faculty members, and families. Each student selected a random animal classification by picking from a hat. Students then had to choose an animal within that classification and start their research using books to gather basic information. Amy Holley, Director of the Library, helped students with computer research and guided them through the process of creating the presentation. Students were able to combine life science learning, use of technology, and communication skills in a single project.
