Welcome to the July edition of the SEEd e-newsletter. Here, you will find news on sustainable development in the Education sector and sustainable schools, ESD, environment news, sustainability news, jobs, funding and any upcoming events, courses or consultations.

A note from the Chief Exec

As Christine Blower from the NUT commented on Tuesday, you may be one of the educators ‘wreathed in smiles’ given the departure of Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Education. But let’s not jump the guns. Nicky Morgan was a Minister under George Osborne and I am not sure yet whether she has any more interest in environment or sustainability than either Michael Gove or George Osborne seem to have had to date - let alone education for them.

However, please do not despair we have a way that you can help! You will be getting an email next week outlining how we would like you to chat to your own MP with a specific ask, that hopefully will allow less of the seesaw effect we are seeing with ESD or EE or even global learning. If we are all asking for this very simple solution we hope to make enough noise to change this more permanently.

Another opportunity is arising from the upcoming UNESCO Decade for ESD final conference in Nagoya in November. The evidence and finding from our Policy Forum in March has got us invited to be part of the UNESCO report on ESD and Quality Education. I went to Beijing last month to present our findings. As a result, I am helping Charles Hopkins, UNESCO Chair for ESD, to collate the findings from around 20 countries. This will be submitted to UNESCO and presented at Nagoya. There are definitely some emerging commonalities internationally that we will share soon.

We will also have some more of our work showcased at Nagoya. SEEd had been invited to help Talik & Co on a contract to create a Sustainability Curriculum for the UAE state school system across all years. This has been a very exciting project and builds on the 3 years of curriculum work we have been doing with you – fora, workshops, online course, web resources etc. It has also been great to work with SEEd members Angus Willson and Margaret Fleming on this too.

Finally, given the end of the first 5 years of SEEd as a new charity – we are about to embark on a low-key internal review and strategic thinking exercise – more anon. But I think it is worth celebrating surviving through a recession, developing a new business model for survival, all the fabulous partnerships, a real emerging shared narrative of what is working and more collaboration. I am very excited especially about the way the Sustainable School Alliance is moving forward though the Board (there are only a couple of places left if you are interested). A new website and audit tool for schools will be launched at the beginning of the next term.

It is designed to enable you to plan and deliver more effective outdoor learning leading for sustainable development, focussing on the role of values, competencies and scientific understanding to support behaviour change for sustainability. The course will be based on a new model and planning tool for outdoor learning that supports the integration of values, competencies and scientific understanding into outdoor learning. Make a difference

  • Sign the petition to keep Environmental Studies as an A Level subject - Ofqual are proposing to withdraw AS and A2 Environmental Studies, with the last cohort starting this September. If you feel that this would reduce the quality and quantity of environmental education available to students, you can add your name to the petition.
  • Report barn owl sightings - If you’re in Northern Ireland, keep your eyes peeled for barn owls. Ulster Wildlife has asked people to report sightings of the threatened birds. 2013 was the barn owl's worst breeding season in over 30 years, and now it's feared that numbers in Northern Ireland may have decreased dramatically.
