Expanding ‘Love Doesn’t Hurt’ with a Grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation
At the end of 2014, Jana’s Campaign received a $50,000 grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation to be used to expand our ‘Love Doesn’t Hurt’ teen dating violence prevention program throughout Kansas over the next two years. Specifically, this grant will support a new and exciting effort to impact high school students through a partnership with the Kansas Department of Education. Working with Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teachers and Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) advisors, Jana’s Campaign has created an educational experience that includes both curricular and co-curricular activities to create lasting school and community impact. Through this multi-dimensional approach, students are able to not only understand the issue and how it affects them, but take action to prevent and respond to teen dating violence in their communities.

Jana’s Campaign promotes and utilizes the evidence-based teen dating violence program Safe Dates to incorporate healthy relationship concepts into the classroom. This ten-session dating abuse curriculum is designed for grades 6 to 12 and is highly engaging and interactive. Safe Dates can easily be infused in family and consumer science, health or social behavior science classes. To supplement classroom learning, Jana’s Campaign also provides mini-grants for students to put knowledge into action, integrating issues of gender-based violence into co-curricular school and community service projects. A few exemplary projects are featured below.

Other ‘Love Doesn’t Hurt’ teen gender violence prevention programming includes school-wide assemblies, classroom presentations, and faculty and staff trainings. Heartland Community Foundation Grant
The Heartland Community Foundation of Hays, Kansas has generously awarded Jana’s Campaign three Dane G. Hansen Community Grants totaling $13,000 to implement in-depth teen dating violence prevention work in three Kansas counties.  These grants will allow us to implement a comprehensive, multi-level approach to teen dating violence in 14 middle and high schools throughout Ellis, Rooks and Trego counties.  This multi-dimensional pilot program includes both curricular and co-curricular elements for students, faculty and staff training and recommendations for school-wide policy revisions for all three counties.
‘In the Name of Love’ Art Program Supported by Midwest Energy
This spring, Midwest Energy (Hays, Kansas) awarded Jana’s Campaign a $1,000 grant to pilot an exciting new arts-based teen dating violence prevention initiative.  This powerful program will be implemented in all five Ellis County middle and high schools, utilizing an impactful art display and school-wide presentations to help young Kansans understand the importance of the issue of teen dating violence, as well as provide teacher guides and support for implementing teen dating violence prevention into art, music, and theater classes and co-curricular organizations. 
Expanding ‘Coaching Boys Into Men’
Futures Without Violence, based in San Francisco, CA, has awarded Jana’s Campaign a $5,000 grant to provide additional trainings to middle and high school athletic coaches through the Coaching Boys Into Men program. This national program trains athletic coaches to use their influence to work with high school male student athletes to build healthy relationships and prevent sexual and dating violence. Over the past two years, Jana’s Campaign has conducted trainings specifically for northwest Kansas schools.  With this grant and a partnership with the state’s Educational Service Centers, we will broaden our scope statewide in 2015 by hosting training sessions in Wichita, Salina, and Girard, Kansas. 2014 Annual Report

Pura Vida Bracelets
We are excited to offer a special “Jana’s Campaign” edition of the popular Pura Vida bracelets to our supporters as a way to raise awareness of our work to prevent gender-based violence. Created in honor of Jana Mackey, each color in the bracelet represents an aspect of our organization. The purple string stands for domestic violence, black is lives lost, grey represents a campaign of action and gold symbolizes a light of hope. We would like to extend a special thank you to Carol Tyner, owner of Saturday Morning Boutique in Council Grove, Kansas for starting this project by designing and selling these bracelets in her store! Campus Safety Summits
The fourth annual Heartland Campus Safety Summit is scheduled for November 3-4, again on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, Kansas. The purpose of this regional and affordable summit is to provide college personnel with education and training for preventing and responding to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and stalking on their campuses. With a grant of $15,000, Verizon Wireless will be the premier sponsor for the 2015 Summit. For more information, please visit The 2014 Summit was extremely successful, bringing together over 300 attendees from eighty-five colleges and universities spanning nine states. Using participant evaluations, a report was compiled and personally delivered to Lynn Rosenthal, the former White House Advisor on Violence Against Women.

Based on the success of the Heartland Campus Safety Summit, Jana’s Campaign is expanding the concept to the Rocky Mountain region. The inaugural summit will be held in the summer of 2016 and will seek participants from the states of Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. We are currently building a consortium of regional colleges and universities to collaborate on the planning and implementation of this annual conference. The Campus Men’s Action Network at Fort Hays State University
In April of 2015, Jana’s Campaign launched the Campus Men’s Action Network (CMAN) at Fort Hays State University (Kansas). CMAN is a student organization that empowers young men to network together and mobilize themselves to build a campus culture of respect for women and to actively engage in the work to end gender-based violence on campus. In order to join, male students, faculty and staff must sign a pledge committing to reject sexism, respect women and promote gender equality. Board president Curt Brungardt will be presenting this model at the National Conference on College Men at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst later this month.
National Gender Violence Curriculum Infusion Repository
During the past six months, Jana’s Campaign board member Heather Lambert and staff member Jennifer Farrington have worked to create the National Gender Violence Curriculum Infusion Repository. This project will be used to create an online inventory and repository that houses sample curricula and educational resources that includes elements of gender-based violence education for colleges and universities. Curriculum samples come from various academic disciplines including law, social work, family studies, counseling, criminal justice, medicine, teacher education, psychology, political science, sociology, and many others. The purpose of this repository is to connect gender-based violence experts and subject matter with faculty members interested in infusing these concepts into their courses.
Special Issue of the eJournal of Public Affairs
Curt and Christie Brungardt of Jana’s Campaign will be the guest editors of a special issue of the eJournal of Public Affairs focusing on higher education’s role in preventing and responding to gender-based violence. This special issue is currently in the review process, and is set to be published in the summer of 2015.

Jana’s Campaign Attends the United Nations Meetings
In March, nine Jana’s Campaign staff and board members attended the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meetings in New York City. Attending these meetings allowed us to learn from international experts in order to bring back what we learned to our region, as well as give us the opportunity to provide input to the growing knowledge-base of how to reduce violence against women worldwide. We would once again like to thank our board members for committing their time and own personal finances to attend the UN meetings.

Tre’ Giles and Jennifer Farrington Join Jana’s Campaign
Jana’s Campaign added an additional board member and staff member to our team in 2015. Tre’ Giles of Colorado Springs, CO joined the board as its youngest member. Tre’ is a recent graduate of Fort Hays State University and member of the Peace Corps, stationed in Gambia, Africa. Jennifer Farrington joined the staff as a program specialist, whose work will primarily focus on our teen dating violence prevention programming. Jennifer is from Hays, Kansas.
Board Retreat- 5 Year Planning
On July 17-18, Jana’s Campaign staff and board members will convene for our bi-annual board retreat in Council Grove, Kansas. This year’s retreat will focus primarily on strategic planning for the next five years. The board and staff are looking forward to working together to build on our momentum and strengthen the future of Jana’s Campaign for years to come.
Membership Drive 2015
Jana’s Campaign is asking our friends to support our ‘Annual Membership Drive’.
