Motivational Minute

March 2012

Go Team, Go!

Basketball season is nearly over, which means it's time to cheer on your favorite teams during March Madness! While we are on the subject of basketball, my husband just finished his second season of coaching my seven year old son in Jr. Jazz Basketball.  It was so amazing and such a neat experience to watch 1st and 2nd graders learn the skill of playing basketball.  They started out as individuals trying to get the ball for themselves and in the end, they were learning to play as a team.  While they still have much to learn about basketball, they built confidence and grew in their knowledge of how to play the game.
Isn't that how it seems in life?  Life is like a game where we start out not knowing much about something but with a little patience and a lot of hard work, we learn to play each round and catch each ball thrown at us.  At times, it seems like life throws us "lemons" or bad things that attempt to halt our progression.  We have two choices when those "lemons" are thrown our way.  We can either take a big bite of that sour lemon and become very bitter inside or we choose to take that big, juicy lemon and make lemonade or something else that is more desirable to the taste.  It is all about our attitudes in our most trial some times.  If we choose to have a good attitude and make a sweet glass of lemonade with that lemon, in the end we have gained more than we have lost.

I know for me, when a doctor told me that I had multiple sclerosis (MS), I felt my life was turned upside down.  I felt I had lost it all and had nothing left in my life.  Here it is twelve years later and I feel that I have come out on top rather than down on the bottom.  My life is not ideal in the fact that I now live with a disability but I am trying to learn to live with it, make the necessary adaptations in my life and maintain a positive outlook.  My lemonade becomes sweeter each time I add a little more sugar to the lemon in my life. (Who knows, I might even make a lemon pie out of it!! hah!)

Basketball icon, Michael Jordan, said, "I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed."  It takes failure a few times to reach true success.  Just as those little boys that I watched this year learn to play basketball, in the same way we must all learn to play the game of life. We will fail at times but we can rise above each failure and in the end, find success.

Take care of yourself.  Talk with you soon!
