An Open Letter to All 70th Engrs

Next Reunion Date Set ...
It's a lock.  We've signed a contract for our next reunion city, Branson, Missouri.  Hearing a number of concerns from the east coast guys that Reno was just too far to travel, we figured that we'd try to split the difference this time.  So, we looked for an interesting city in the mid-section of the country where folks might like to vacation as well as just come to a reunion.  Branson, MO fit that bill.  We'll be at the Radisson-Branson, June 7-9, 2013 (Friday evening, all-day Saturday, Sunday morning).

Once we get a little closer, we'll be posting the registration form on our website and an event website that will be set up for us by the hotel.  In the meantime, here's some information you might like to know so you can begin your planning:

Guestroom Rate — includes up to two continential breakfasts, served in our on-site restaurant. Guests can upgrade to the breakfast buffet for an additional $4.00 per person in the on-site restaurant..

King or Double $89.00
    (~$99.33 with taxes)
2-Room Leisure Suite $129.00
    (~$144.00 with taxes)
2-Room Presidential Suite $169.00
    (~189.00 with taxes)

  1. Guestrooms rates are subject to state (7.6%) and local (4.0%) taxes. Plus, the hotel has agreed to extend these preferred rates for 3 days before and 3 days after our contracted dates. So that means that these room rates are available to us from June 4 through June 12, 2013 for those who might be thinking about extending your stay in one direction and/or another.
  2. For those who might be pulling or driving an RV, complimentary RV parking is available, but guests cannot stay overnight in their RVs. They must register for a room in the hotel.
  3. The hotel is "Pet-Friendly" — however, there is a $35 non-refundable deposit per stay.

Meals — Like in Reno, we're planning to provide h'orderves and a cash-bar available at the Friday evening introduction. But, because breakfast has been included by the hotel, we're planning only one meal for this reunion, on Saturday night. Cost of that meal will be $40/person + taxes/gratuities (~$53 — actual price may vary slightly depending on food costs in June 2013). Like in Reno, we're planning to have a nice buffett style dinner with three types of meats for you to enjoy.

Entertainment — Branson has quite a numbers of shows available. As we get closer, we'll take a survey to see if there might be any interest in any of the shows and then we'll look at whether we can obtain any type of group discounts.

Photos — Unlike the Reno reunion, it hasn't been easy to find an affordable photographer to work our reunion and provide photo CDs.  So, Vickie and I are going to bring our electronic camera, and a tripod to take group photos just before Saturday evening's dinner. We'll also take some candid shots throughout the reunion. You might want to bring along your electronic camera as well, if you have one.  We'll upload any and all photos up to the 70th Engineers Google Photos account and then link them out to the website where you can view and download any photo(s) you'd like to have.  For those who don't have PCs or Internet access, we'll bring along a rack of CDs so we can burn a set of photos to CDs.  Folks can then take the CD a local photo vendor for prints or to the kid house to view all the photos on their PC.

Our Website
For those of you who may not know, we do have a website: http://70engrbtn.blogspot.com/ . You might want to take some time to peruse what's available: company rosters, awards documentation, after-action reports and operational reports of lessons learned .... but most of all, photos. There are also links that will take you to the sites of other affiliated units, vietnam veterans groups and the Veterans Administration.

Do You Have Something You'd Like to Share?
If you have some photos or some documents you'd like to share on our website, please contact Roger Rock at 775-623-1029 and talk to him about ways you might be able to get those materials to him to publish.  Basically, if you can get them in electronic format (scanned copies), you can email the copies of the files to him at roger.rock@yahoo.com or 70engrs@gmail.com.

If you'd like to post an article in the main body of the website to share with all the other guys, just email Roger your article and he'll get Vickie to post it out to the site.

Welcome Home!

Many of us who served together didn't think at the time, to keep in touch or to register a database to keep track of us.  Of the more than 3,000 young men who served with the 70th Engrrs in Vietnam, we've been able to find less than 500 thus far.  But that doesn't mean we've stopped looking.  If you know folks who served with the 70th who didn't get this newsletter, please share it with them and then have them call Roger Rock at (775) 623-1029.
