From the Principal
Kia ora tātou,
Like you all, we had a tumultuous start to the new school year. I was impressed by how the staff and the students came back to school after the flooding and the cyclone and just settled into work. I thought it was remarkable how everyone put aside what had happened to their homes and made school a safe, happy place. Thanks to everyone for doing that. Please have a good holiday and recover so we can keep going in term 2.
We have been working with the Ministry of Education on plans to make sure Kelston Girls is watertight and free from mould. A major roofing project is planned to start as soon as possible. We will keep you updated on the progress.
We are installing a camera system over the holidays so we can keep everyone safe on site and we are adding wireless points to our wifi system to make our wifi system more stable. In July we have plans to tiger turf the upper courts. Steadily we are working on making Kelston Girls a great place to be.
I hope you all have a restful break over the April holidays and that we see you all back next term well rested and ready for more teaching and learning.

World Pool Championships
We are very excited and proud to share the achievements of our students, Aaliyah & Laquiesha Clifford. the sisters have been selected to represent Aotearoa at the 33rd Annual VNEA Junior World Pool Championships in Sioux City, Nebraska, USA! They will compete in July in the Under 16 age group in three events consisting of female singles, scotch pairs and the teams (3xplayers) event.
They will travel under the Masse NZ Pool team, but proudly represent Glen Eden RSA, Kelston Girls' College, and their whanau, hapu and iwi of Ngapuhi! They have put in a lot of training, time and committment outside of school.
Ka wani ke korua! Congratulations, awesome work Aaliyah & Laquiesha. He hua na to whakapau kaha! You are now reaping the rewards of your hard work. Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui!

Theatre Production - Performance, Set Design & Script Writing
In this module students have studied the Dawn Raids that happened in 1970’s New Zealand. They looked at the events and political climate that led to it, what happened and the impacts that it has had since. In small groups students have devised and performed a drama piece. In Art they have designed and hand drawn illustrations that have cut and reversed, to create the reverse pattern. Using Photoshop they have coloured and duplicated their design to create a repeat pattern wallpaper that could be used for their set.

My Taonga My Treasures
In Art students have been using a range of wet & dry media to show the beauty, skill, history and preciousness of a range of taonga. The have drawn and painted landscapes, hei-tiki, hei-matau, Huia & Waka Huia

Volleyball
The Kelston Girls' Volleyball Team played in the Auckland Secondary School Senior Championships on Wednesday 16th March - Friday 18th March at Bruce Pulman Arena. Although the team hadn't had a long time to prepare they smashed their first game, winning in two sets against Marcellin College. The second game started strong, but when our setter, went down and out with a rolled ankle the team couldn't quite get back in the game and we lost to Westlake Girls 2. On Thursday the team repeated their win one, lose one pattern, losing the first game to Rosehill but beating Massey. On the last day of the tournament Kelston lost the first game, but won their last game of the tournament in a very convincing manner. It was awesome to end the tournament on a high, especially since the team had no subs but managed to smash the last game! The team really bonded and grew together over the 3 day tournament. They played each game better and better and they were great supporters and ambassadors of the school. Shout out to Fleur for taking the setting role on completely and for being hungry for the ball, Grace for fantastic leadership and backcourt play, Mercedez for setting and supporting the team, Apu for getting some great hits down the line, Bryanna for keeping focused and going hard for the ball, Noelene for working hard on court and always swinging for the ball, Hope for keeping the chat going (and going and going) and Leala for consistent serves, smiles, and spikes. Ms Bone and Mr Fale are very proud of the girls and look forward to growing the sport of Volleyball at Kelston Girls!

Careers Corner
At Kelston Girls’ College we believe it is important for students to spend time exploring their career options.
In order to support this exploration, our careers staff have organised a mega careers expo ‘Careers Out West’ along with seven other West Auckland secondary schools.
This expo will take place on Wednesday 24th May at The Trusts Arena, Henderson.There will be over 70 organisations at the expo and this includes education and training organisations along with businesses who have employment opportunities and school leaver training programmes available. It will be a fun and interactive expo with plenty to see and do.
All Year 11 - 13 students will be attending Careers Out West from 1pm - 2.30pm on Wednesday 24th May.
The expo will also be open in the evening between 4pm and 7.30pm and we warmly encourage families to attend. When young people discuss their career plans openly with their whanau then they are much more likely to make those plans happen and enjoy positive career outcomes. Also, students who have a clear career plan are more focused and motivated in school.
You can support your daughters by taking the time to visit the expo with them.

Student Career Success
We love to celebrate the success of our students. The following story about an ex-student, Harvest Levuka, shows that amazing things can happen if you put your hand up for new opportunities.
Like many students, Harvest has many talents but was confused about her future pathway. Towards the end of 2022, she took part in an opportunity offered by the Kelston Girls’ College careers department. This was a programme called Te Ara, which is run by the Northern Job and Skills Hub. Students doing the programme are placed into paid summer work in the construction industry.
Harvest was placed in an office role working for City Rail Link Alliance. This has now become a full time contract. Her role involves onboarding staff who are new to the company. She works in a team of young Pasifika people and is happy and thriving in her job. What’s more: she is already earning the equivalent of a university graduate!
Congratulations to Harvest and her aiga on her success.

What is Gateway?
The Gateway programme is designed to strengthen the pathway for senior students to gain confidence and experience in the workplace. Students have the opportunity to be placed in businesses and industries and have an understanding of working one day a week for up to 5-8 weeks and gain 23 credits. They are supported by their tutor and staff at the placement. This can also lead to part-time work in the holidays.
There is no cost to students and is fully funded by the Tertiary Education Commission.

Our first group of students attended The Warehouse in Lincoln Road, 4 weeks ago.
The Manager of the store was very impressed with our students, praising them and
saying they are the best students he has had at the store. Great feedback
