How to Think Yourself Into a Fit Person

Simple Habits You Can Start Today

Can the secret to becoming fit be something as simple as, well, believing you're fit?

According to an article written by Shaelyn Strachan, Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba,  there are key things you can do to create an 'exercise identity', and a big part of it is how we can use our minds to positively influence our physical fitness.

Check out the blog below and learn about Strachan's research and her advice on how you can think yourself into becoming a fit person!

Valarie Adamson

Hi, I’m Val!

You can find me everywhere – teaching classes in the Fitness Centre, running our Barbell classes in the Performance Centre, greeting members at the Guest Services desk, and behind-the-scenes keeping our gym operating smoothly.

I moved from Saskatoon to Winnipeg about two-and-a-half years ago. I was raised in Saskatchewan, growing up on my parents farm and moving into the “big” city to complete my post secondary education. Even though my degree is in business, I found my love for fitness and sport by joining a friend’s CrossFit gym.

When I am not lifting (or helping others with their lifting), I spend my time enjoying the outdoors and hanging out with my family: two dogs named Huckleberry Finn and Peaches, two cats named Kilo and Murdoch, one rabbit named Tiger, and a husband named James – yes, it is basically a little petting zoo at our house, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you ever want to talk about lifting or animals, I am your gal!

Reminder: Upcoming Closure

August 3-18

The Fitness Centre and gymnasium will be closed for facility maintenance August 3 – 18, 2019. During this closure, shower drainage areas in the building, including those within the Fitness Centre, will be repaired and improved. The gymnasium courts will also be repaired and resurfaced. Fumes from the gymnasium resurfacing will travel into the Fitness Centre area. Unfortunately, this work means members and the general public will be unable to access the Fitness Centre and gymnasium during this period.

We understand this negatively impacts your fitness routine. Here are some important things to know about the closure, and how your membership or training will be affected:
  • FREE GROUP CLASSES led by our instructors will be offered at Stephen Juba Park on Waterfront Drive or in Montessori School Yard throughout the closure – these won’t count against your regular membership classes.
  • Members who’ve paid for memberships upfront will receive a 15 day extension on their memberships.
  • Members who are on monthly auto-renew will see the month of August prorated accordingly.
  • Personal trainers will reach out to their clients to make arrangements for continued uninterrupted training.
  • While regular, bi-annual court resurfacing is necessary for the upkeep of the gymnasium, reparation of the courts and drainage shower systems are a special one-time circumstance. In the future, court resurfacing will be scheduled during holiday long weekends with minimal impact on regular business hours.
We continue to strive to provide you with a state-of-the-art facility that helps you achieve all your health and fitness goals. The maintenance occurring during this closure will have a lot of a positive outcomes for the Fitness Centre. We greatly appreciate your patience and sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to connect with us at Guest Services in person, on the phone at 204-925-5931, or via email at
