The latest news from ICBL-CMC includes:
  • News of recently detained human rights advocates and ICBL-CMC members Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif Yunus by Azerbaijani authorities and a call for their immediate release;

ICBL-CMC Calls for Immediate Release of Leyla and Arif Yunus Arrested by Azerbaijani Authorities
ICBL-CMC joins partners from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Human Rights House Network, and the South Caucus Network of Human Rights Defenders, in calling on the Azerbaijani authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of renowned human rights advocate and ICBL-CMC campaign member Leyla Yunus arrested on 30 July, 2014, and her husband Arif Yunus, arrested on 5 August.

Ongoing Cluster Munition Use in Syria
July 2014 marked the second anniversary of cluster bomb use in Syria. Syrian government forces continue to use banned cluster bombs, killing innocent civilians now and threatening Syrians for generations to come.

The Syria webpage contains detailed information, including government condemnations, and a Syria Media kit including photographs, videos, testimonies, infographics and more.

Campaigners demand fair play for kids at risk from Brazil’s cluster bomb policy
As football fever seized the world, CMC campaigners around the world took a closer look at World Cup host Brazil’s cluster bomb policy and asked, is it fair play that global cluster bomb contamination risks the lives and limbs of thousands of young people wanting to enjoy the ‘beautiful game’?
 

ICBL-CMC Campaigner Announced as 2014 Women PeaceMaker
Congratulations to Margaret Arach Orech - ICBL Ambassador and Director of the ICBL-CMC member organisation Uganda Landmine Survivors Association - who has been announced as one of the 2014 Women PeaceMakers.

Treaty Banning Cluster Bombs Marks Four-year Anniversary
On the fourth anniversary of it first becoming binding international law, campaigners urged countries worldwide to join the international treaty banning cluster bombs. Read the CMC 1 August Press Release, and also a Huffington Post blog by CMC Director Sarah Blakemore on the anniversary, urging the world to speak out on cluster munition use in Syria.

 

Third Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty
The Conference took place from 23 to 27 June in 2014 in Maputo, Mozambique. ICBL issued a Completion Challenge to States Parties, asking them to commit to complete all major treaty obligations within the next decade.

More information can be found on ICBL's Third Review Conference webpage, including ICBL thematic statements, survivor statements,  press releases (including ICBL's closing press release), photographs, and a series of informative publications and resources produced for the conference, including maps illustrating progress to-date. Landmine Monitor released a portfolio of excellent publications, providing an invaluable source of information on Ban Policy, Mine Action and Casualties and Victim Assistance.

Videos produced for the conference included a Youth to Youth Network video statement, featuring ICBL youth campaigners from around the world and ICBL member Handicap International's video 'Mozambique: Answering the MBT', focusing on what Mozambique has achieved since hosting the first Meeting of States Parties in 1999.

Worrying Evidence of Cluster Munition Use and Landmine Use in Ukraine

Troubling reports of the use of both cluster bombs and landmines in Ukraine continue to be investigated. ICBL-CMC strongly urges all parties to the conflict to ensure no cluster munitions or antipersonnel mines are used by any actor and to destroy any cluster bombs or antipersonnel mines they have seized or otherwise acquired.
