The Dowse in Lower Hutt: Sonny Broughton, Jim Cooper, Liu Jianhua

Welcome to August,

It is amazing what you can achieve in a short space of time. Recently I spent a day in Wellington with a friend driving around to a couple of galleries I hadn’t been to before. With the benefit of a friend with car, we took in Pataka to see John Walsh’s exhibition, the Dowse to see Liu Jianhua and ended at the City Gallery viewing both the Frances Upritchard retrospective and an excellent show of video works. I was back in Auckland by 5pm!

I am very jealous I won’t be going with Mary Kisler to France and Spain this year. We reviewed the itinerary this week and places like Cassis, Cadaques, Tossa De Mar and Ibiza just look incredible. Mary sets off in early September to visit the locations that enchanted Frances Hodgkins. It should be amazing.

Speaking of incredible, Sue Gardiner's tour to New York is shaping up nicely and should also be amazing, including Houston. We will definitely be fitting in a lot on this journey including meeting a few collectors, artists and kiwis who have decided to call that part of the world home.

Coming up we have pencilled in two day trips in November, including “Up North” to Brick Bay to visit the sculpture trail and The Vivian Gallery in Omaha. We also have a day booked in to visit our friends “Out West” including McCahon House, Te Uru to see the Anne McCahon show, Te Toi Uku, to visit the Crown Lynn Museum and with a final stop at Corban Estate. This will be a busy but rewarding day.

As for next year we are working on that but look out for late summer tours to Wellington and Gisborne, there is the possibility of a Venice Biennale tour later in the year, and I would also like to do a Melbourne “Town and Country” tour to visit what I hear are some great places such as Bendigo and Ballarat in country Victoria.

As usual always more to come.

See you on tour.

Wellington - Early 2017

We are currently working on a plan for 2 - 3 nights in Wellington in mid February. The plan would be to visit galleries such as Pataka, The Dowse, and the City Gallery, where the Cindy Sherman show would be on. We will visit local dealer galleries and plan to visit and artist or two.

If this sounds like you please register here
Melbourne  - Town and Country - Dates to be advised: 2017

We are currently researching a Melbourne 'Town and Country' tour for 2017. This might look like 2 or 3 nights in in Melbourne and a night in Bendigo and Ballarat, and I am told that Daylesford is beautiful small town with a vibrant art scene. Both Bendigo and Ballarat have a well respected regional art gallery and interesting history.

Sounds good to me - what do you think? - let me know

Venice Biennale and the Veneto - September 2017

We are thrilled to be in the initial stages of planning for a 'Venice and the Veneto' program for September 2017, to coincide with the Venice Biennale.
It is exciting to advise that Jennifer Buckley is interested in leading a group through the Veneto taking in a mix of art, architecture and culture. Jennifer is the Founding Director of the Auckland Art Fair and has recently returned from the launch of New Zealand’s exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale were she was the Programme Manager. Spending time in Venice and the Veneto has instilled a deep passion for the area which she would love to share.

We look forward to more details soon, but in the meantime we would love to know if there is interest in a small group visit to Venice in September next year. Of course in 2017 Lisa Reihana is New Zealand's representative at the at the Venice Biennale.

Art Travel Destination : Cairns and Tropical North Queesnland
While not on the main trunk route for art destinations in Australia, if you find yourself up north.....these works are currently on show at  Cairns Regional Gallery, centrally located in Cairns in a historic building. This was a great gallery with some amazing works including a new media show. While relatively modest in size the quality of work was excellent, and we had just missed the recently held indigenous art fair
The sun rises over Palm Cove, a nice relaxing spot twenty minutes north of Cairns.
