10/15/14  Escondido, CA City Council Meeting

It was a spirited night!  Passions were high. TV cameras were blazing. The city council chamber was filled to capacity - with an overflow section.

The ACLU filed an appeal in opposition to the unanimous Escondido Planning Commission decision to NOT construct a housing facility for illegal Central American border crossers in a residential area, at the site of a former elder care center.  The Escondido Planning Commission voted 7 to 0 against the proposed center.

The detention center would house 96 minors - from Central America. The detention center would bring $8 million dollars (tax dollars) per year to the city, according to the ACLU.

The appeal set forward by the ACLU forced the Escondido City Council Members to cast their first vote on the detention center.

The Escondido City Council voted 4 to 1 to NOT construct the proposed detention center.

The public hearing featured 50 speakers opposed to the detention center and 35 in favor of constructing the detention center.
The ACLU will proceed with a "discrimination" lawsuit that will be extremely costly to the city.

“…Catholic Charities gets billions of taxpayer dollars for refugee resettlement and general immigration services, which puts it into the category of a smallish government agency. For example, in 2010, 62 percent of Catholic Charities’ budget was funded by the unwilling taxpayer. The feds and the Catholic bishops are partners.”
