Which Android Device is Best to Run AvPlan EFB?

This week, Android Developer Edgar Olyerhoek takes a look at the best Android devices to use for AvPlan EFB:

Screen Essentials

CASA mandates a screen size of at least 200mm (tap here for more information regarding CASA's EFB requirements).

Regarding screen resolution, a higher resolution means sharper maps but also increases battery usage, so be sure to always fly with a portable battery if your aircraft is not equipped with USB ports. Also make sure the screen is bright enough to use in the cockpit on a sunny day.
Which Android Version?

The minimum Android version to run AvPlan EFB is Android 5 (Lollipop) but this will be raised to Android 6 (Marshmallow) in the near future.

The latest Android version is 11 and I recommend to get at least Android 10 to make sure the device stays supported for a long time.
Also, do make sure the device has a GPS/GNSS sensor - almost all Android devices do, but a few don’t, such as the Pixel C and the Amazon Fire.

We also recommend you purchase a device that is 4G capable. This was you will be able to access AvPlan Live Traffic, weather updates and weather radar in flight.

Storage Space
AvPlan EFB can take around 5GB of data depending on the maps that are downloaded so storage space is not a major concern, but if you do download a lot of data, consider the storage capacity when buying.

Edgar's Personal Pick
I personally use the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. I like the lite version because it has a lower resolution screen and a slightly less powerful processor but still adequate to run AvPlan EFB
Budget devices often lack performance, screen resolution and battery life, so do be wary of buying a 'bargain' device. Furthermore,  a lesser known name can sometimes have exotic hardware and software that can lead to unexpected behaviour, so I personally wouldn’t recommend them.

We have successfully tested the Samsung Galaxy Tab S series and the Samsung Galaxy Tab A series with good results, so for best performance, I recommend you consider these if purchasing a new device.

As with any EFB, do a pre-flight check to make sure you have the latest data and the device is charged.
