I’m two months into a #YearOfTravel, and the experience has been nothing like I expected. The amount of rain has been maddening — as one lady put it, “the Lake District is proof that you won’t dissolve into a puddle!”
But my favorite part has been connecting with locals during the Christmas season: attending carol services, sipping tea at candlelight services, and even playing a psaltery.
Time and again, I’m touched by the spirit of hospitality. To quote Charles Dickens, “The happiness [they] give, is quite as great as if it cost a fortune.” “I have always thought of Christmas time… as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time… when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.”
