CAAT in the News

Lena Smirnova appointed Assistant Professorship for Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology

We are proud to announce that CAAT's Lena Smirnova has accepted the offer for an Assistant Professorship for Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology within the Johns Hopkins University Department of Environmental Health & Engineering.

Made possible by an anonymous donor to CAAT, an independent search committee interviewed eight candidates, and ultimately suggested Dr. Smirnova. Through this position, CAAT's research and outreach will be greatly amplified, and we would like to invite everyone to join us in congratulating her on this accomplishment!

August 25 3Rs Training Webinar now available on YouTube

SAVE THE DATE: Green Toxicology Webinar | Grand Rounds

CAAT will be hosting a webinar in honor of the publication of Alexandra Maerten's new book, "Green Toxicology: Making Chemicals Benign by Design" on Friday, September 9 from 10:30 AM-11:45 AM ET.

Dr. Maertens will be joined by Peter Fantke (Technical University of Denmark) and Jakub Kostal (The George Washington University) to discuss the role of green toxicology in the green chemistry ecosystem and within the broader goal of sustainability.

Visit the Green Toxicology event here for more information and to register.

Following the webinar, from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM ET, John Warner (Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry) will be speaking at the Grand Rounds 2022 virtual event, "Green Chemistry: The Missing Elements".

Visit the Grand Rounds event here for more information on the event.

SAVE THE DATE: OpenTox 2022 Virtual Conference

The OpenTox 2022 Virtual Conference will take place from Monday, September 12-Friday, September 16.

Don't forget to register to see Thomas Hartung present on the topic of "Toward probabilistic risk assessment – the ONTOX project" on Tuesday, September 13 at 5:05 PM CEST/11:05 AM ET.

Visit the congress website here for more information.

SAVE THE DATE: Biointerfaces International Conference - Pre-Conference Seminar

In addition to giving a keynote speech at the upcoming Biointerfaces International Conference, Thomas Hartung will also be presenting at the pre-workshop on Monday, September 12. Dr. Hartung's presentation will take place at 9:10 AM CES/3:10 AM ET.

The program for the pre-conference seminar is available on the website here.

Registration closes on Thursday, September 8. Don't miss your chance to register!

SAVE THE DATE: Clinical Trials on Chips to Tackle Rare Diseases

In advance of a workshop that is being co-organized by NICETAM, that will take place in October 2022, a webinar series is being convened to highlight NAMs that incorporate variability and susceptibility into the evaluation of chemical safety. The second webinar in this series will be held on Monday, September 12and will feature two presentations about using tissue chips to address medical needs of genetically susceptible subpopulations.

Visit the event website here to register and learn more about the webinar's speakers.

SAVE THE DATE: #Talking3RScience: GCCP 2.0: Cell Culture for the 21st Century

The next Talking3RScience webinar will host a discussion with David Pamies (University of Lausanne) on how to generate good-quality reproducible InVitro data. Register and join us on Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 5:00-6:00 PM CEST.
You can now access all previous Talking3RScience webinars via the 3R Network Baden-Württemberg’s YouTube channel.

SAVE THE DATE: NICEATM Symposium Webinar - Registration Open

NICEATM is organizing a symposium webinar on Wednesday, October 26-Thursday, October 27 to discuss “Using New Approach Methodologies to Address Variability and Susceptibility Across Populations.”

Registration is now open at

Different human populations exhibit different levels of susceptibility to toxic effects from chemical exposure, presenting a complex problem for chemical risk assessment. Human cell-based and computational NAMs could potentially be used effectively to characterize susceptibility of different human populations. The symposium will identify:
  • Opportunities for NAMs to provide relevant information on population variability and susceptibility to environmental chemicals.
  • Information needs for population variability and susceptibility where NAMs could be designed or improved to fill those needs.
