Advocacy

Hey OYFA!
Read about major developments in the world and in Advocacy!

Politics:
In China, Duterte announces split with US: 'America has lost'.

This is a pretty monumental event, everyone. After a history of diplomatic, military and financial ties between America and the Philippines, Duterte, the Philippines’s President has recently announced his military and economic "separation" from the United States in an attempt to further establish FIlipino sovereignty. "America has lost now.” He has forged closer ties to China and, in doing so, pushed China and the Philippines’s dispute over the South China sea to the backburner. Duterte says, "And maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world: China, Philippines and Russia. It's the only way.” However, Duterte also didn't provide details about how he'd break away from the United States, or what the separation could entail.

Halo Haloween: Coming up this week, join us for
Halo Haloween on Wednesday at 6:30 PM at Lambeth Commons! We’ll be enjoying some halo-halo for $3 a cup and watching The Road, a Filipino horror film. Come in costume because we’ll be taking lots of pictures! Hope to see you all there!

Word of the Week:  Halo-halo (ha-lo ha-lo) which is a popular Filipino shaved ice dessert with mixtures of ube ice cream, condensed milk, nata de coco, coconut strips, pandan jelly, lychee, and other ingredients. It literally means “mix mix” in Tagalog and is a descendant of a traditional Japanese shaved ice treat.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Take care of yourselves and take care of each other.
