Advocacy

Hey OYFA! Here’s a bit of news to get your mind off of exams.

Politics: Rodrigo Duterte, Philippines' 'Trump,' Runs on Rape Jokes, Violent Promises

It’s election season in the Philippines - in fact, the presidential elections on May 9th! One candidate, Rodrigo Duterte, is dubbed as the Philippine’s version of Donald Trump. He says he would “he would pardon himself for mass murder and kill any of his children if they were involved with drugs” along with a slew of sexist jokes. Contrary to Trump, Duterte does have strong political experience. As mayor of Davao city, he transformed the murder capital into one of the country’s safest cities. With promises of cutting down corruption and crime, it is not less surprising that 35% of respondents to a poll said they would vote for Duterte. A woman states, “He may be crass and foul-mouthed, but the man has a heart of gold. His advocacy of women and kids are a testament of what he truly is." “I like him for his iron hand against corruption, drugs and crime,” another voter says.

Heritage: Asian-American and Pacific Islander Timeline http://www.diversityinc.com/diversity-facts/asianpacific-american-heritage-month-timeline-facts/
With the closing of APAHM, it’s important to look at how laws in the United States have or have not changed for the better.  We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a lot of room for progress!

It’s been such a pleasure sharing news articles with you all! Thank you for reading and have a nice summer!

D7 Representatives

Hey Everyone!

First, I would like to introduce to you my co-chair, John Herrick, our interim D7 representative. Second, as I mentioned in last week’s WIO, D7 Executive Board elections are approaching! The date has been set to Saturday, May 21st. The positions that are available to run for are District 7 include District Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, Webmaster, Public Relations, and Alumni Relations.

If you have any questions or need clarification about these positions and what responsibilities they entail, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you would like to run or if there is anyone in OYFA whom you would like to nominate for any of these positions, e-mail either John or me with their name and what position you would like to nominate them for.

So why should you run for D7 Executive Board? Well, not only does it give you an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experiences, it also opens many networking opportunities. This gives you the chance to work and grow with leaders from other schools in our district, ranging from James Madison University to University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Running for D7 Executive Board provides you with the experience of being part of a larger Filipino community outside of home or UVA, so please consider it.

On that note, we hope everyone enjoys their summer and hopefully we will see you at the End of the Year Picnic or Beach Week. Feel free to contact us even if you don’t have any questions. Good luck on finals fam!

Love,
D7nielle (dgr3ce) and John (jah6vg)
