Hello OYFA!!

Green Dot Training:
March 26th from 11am to 5pm, OYFA will be participating in Green Dot Training. This training will teach us the necessary skills of how to be better bystanders in helping prevent sexual violence in our community. The training includes a brief lecture, individual reflection, small group interaction, and high energy activities. The training is six hours long and lunch will be provided! Filipino Current News:
Much has happened in the Philippines since our last update. For one, President Duterte will not be sending an ambassador to America for personal reasons, affecting the US-Philippines relationship. The countries’ relationship has been up and down as President Duterte welcomed Donald Trump’s presidential victory, and many believed that would help mend relationship between the two countries. Duterte had accused the US of building a “permanent” arms depot in his country and warned Trump that that jeopardizes their security treaty. Earlier this week, Duterte again supported Trump’s travel ban but would do nothing to help illegal Philippines migrants in the US.

Word of the Week: “Bahala ka” (bah-hah-LAH ka) means “you do what you want” in the most petty, bitter way possible.

Take care of yourselves and each other!

Name: Sara Wong
Year: 3rd year
Major: Economics, minor in religious studies
Favorite OYFA event: I really enjoyed Barrio because all of the practices allowed us to meet new people and become really close with each other. I learned a lot more about Filipino culture and their traditional dances as well. I also had never danced in front of a large crowd before, so it was a really fun and unique experience.
Favorite class taken at UVA: My favorite class at UVA so far has been Business, Ethics, and Society. I really loved my professor because she was really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. This class is also what made me want to minor in religious studies because it perfectly combines business with religion and really makes you think critically about how corporations run their businesses and question whether or not their decisions and actions are ethical.
Visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why? I would really love to visit Noosa Heads, Australia because it has the perfect combination of shops and dining, beaches, and a rain forest, so I would be able to relax and explore.
Wish one thing to come true this year, what would it be? This year, I hope to be more adventurous by traveling to new places, meeting new people, and trying new things.
