Board Announcements

We hope that you all had an amazing spring break and are ready to finish the rest of this semester strong.
Council elections are (no way!) on Saturday 3/18, 10AM at Ohill Forum. We truly encourage all candidates to talk to incoming Boards and past chairs in preparation for the elections as well as for the position. It is important that you understand the responsibilities of the committees and the people who you will be working with.

We are holding 2 office hours this week:
  • Council Office Hours: Tuesday 10-11PM at Multicultural Student Center
  • Board Office Hours: Thursday 9:30-10:30PM at Multicultural Student Center

If you cannot make it to the office hours, don't hesitate to message any of us. Also, we stress the candidates should also speak to people outside of office hours to have a firm understanding of the position.

All the details regarding the position and the election process are here!
We would like to see you there for as much of the elections as possible since we want to have a diversity of perspectives.

Best of luck to all of our candidates!

Welcome back everyone!! Hope your break was restful and as sweet as you all are ;D Here’s what happening around the world and with us:

Current News: In the Philippines, communist rebels and the government have agreed to resume peace talks and restore cease-fires. President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened an all-out war with rockets and bombs against the “New People's Army” for killing four policemen and wounding another. Norway, acting as a mediator, hosted talks afterwards that led to the decision of continuing peace negotiations instead. Hopefully, the two groups can set aside their differences, peacefully ending one of Asia’s longest running rebellions.

Green Dot Training:

In TWO WEEKS-March 26th- from 11am to 5pm, OYFA will be going to
Green Dot Training! This training will teach us how to be better bystanders in helping prevent sexual violence in our community. The training includes a brief lecture, individual reflection, small group interaction, and high energy activities. The training is six hours long and free lunch will be provided! Sign up here in the OYFA slot:

Word of the Week:

“Bayang magiliw” (bah-yahng ma-gil-ew) means “friendly people” and is the first line of the Philippine national anthem. There are tons of “bayang magiliw” in Barrio’s National Anthem or skit committee so if you have a talent - sign up HERE for skit and watch the Barrio 2017 Facebook page for the national anthem sign ups!!

OYFA Bake Sale is almost underway! Join us with Advocacy on March 20th when we sell some amazing and popular Filipino treats on the South Lawn such as: Biko, Puto, Sago, and Turon!!! We will be baking the night before in the Lorna Sundberg International Center from 5-7PM on Sunday March 19th! It will be a really chill session with your current D7 and Advocacy chairs with tons of jokes, refreshments, and kitchen shenanigans. Come through if you would love to help or do some work. We would really value your company :).
This will be one of the last blurbs you will hear from your beloved D7 chairs. We just want to say that we are so proud to be behind some of the most amazing people in this UVA community. Thank you all for enjoying what we as OYFA and the wide D7 community has to offer in this past year. We hope that as we expand our reach across the United States, more opportunities will open up to bring a new, rich experience to us here at UVA!

Mabuhay and Thank You All!

Hope everyone had a wonderful break! We would like to thank all those who came out to Mr. & Ms. OYFA! Technically our next event will be Barrio After party after Barrio of course, but our term will be over by then.

If you are planning on running for council, feel free to reach out to either of us for advice even if the committee you are interested in isn’t social! Best of luck!
