April - Happy Birthday & Open House Revelry

Happy Birthday to Us! High Desert Art & Frame is four years old! This past year has been a looong one, or so it seems. We've dipped our toe into the world of online coupons through Groupon and Living Social. To our great delight, you've responded by bringing your artwork, memorabilia and photographs in by the tons! Thanks to everyone who made it a great year.

To celebrate our birthday, we're having a party. Join us on Saturday, April 28 from 10 am to 6 pm so we can show our appreciation to you, our loyal customers. We’re serving food and drink, we’ll have activities for children, plus a free drawing for prizes. But really, who needs an excuse? You don't turn four every year. Come help us celebrate!

We bought ourselves a present, too - a brand new Miter Master M100 miter saw. Now, we can carry length molding, cut it ourself in the shop, and turn your framing projects around even faster.

Until we see you again,
Teri, Stephen and Bob

Customer Kudos - Howlin' Hubert!

Howlin for Hubert was a February tribute at the Apollo Theater in New York to guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who passed away last year. Guitar & music greats like Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Jimmie Vaughan, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II and Elvis Costello, made it one for the history books. Customer Mae Peterson collected some soveniers of the evening. We laid out all the elements and did a "see it before you frame it" capture for Mae. She obviously loves her finished project, and we love being able to create such a special memory for her.

Have a special project you'd like to see featured here? Let us know! We love showing off your creativity.

Featured Artist: Daniel Ludwig
http://www.danielludwigpaints.com

April's featured artist is Daniel Ludwig. Based in New Mexico, Ludwig was raised surrounded by the red rocks and beauty of the desert Southwest. He is a self-taught artist who has been painting off and on for over 25 years. He travels the area searching for inspiration - sometimes drawn to structures, sometimes to the breathtaking landscape, most of the time showing a certain irreverence for his subjects. He focuses on having fun with his chosen medium and the chance it affords him to spend time in his beloved country.

Ludwig hopes to involve the viewer in his paintings by suggesting the feeling or emotion of a place rather than recording in exact detail what he is observing. At times, exact forms are left up to the imagination. He prints on giclee with premium watercolor paper and the finest permanent inks. Because he's very fussy about the final reproduction, he personally inspects each print to be sure it's an accurate match of the original painting.

Join us for the First Friday Artscrawl reception on April 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. to meet the artist and view his works, like these two.

HDAF Artist Wins Advocacy Award

George Pearce was our featured artist in January. He's been named the 2012 recipient of the Steve Schiff KAFB Advocacy Award from the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. The award is given to individuals for their past, present, and future commitment to the promotion and preservation of Kirtland Air Force Base and the military community. According to the Chamber, “George’s professional career was spent entirely as a public affairs officer for various Department of Defense agencies, primarily at Kirtland AFB. He retired in 1997 as Director of Public Affairs for the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland AFB.” See George's work at this link.

Displaying a Beaded Project

What to do, what to do? What to do with Jennifer Johnson's beautiful beaded artwork showing St. Francis surrounded by animals? Displaying it took a special eye and a little extra from Stephen, our Certified Picture Framer.

The piece already had a pocket for a hanging dowel, so we found a lovely wooden finial to dress up the plain rod (left). The finish and style don't detract from the intricate beadwork, either. That's definitely the focus of the project.

Stephen created a deep frame to ensure that the glass didn't touch the artwork. That's a no no in the
framing world, and could lead to problems down the line. To make the inside of the frame special, Stephen used a fabric mat, and wrapped the insides of the frame, too, to present a finished look. It was a little extra work, but a beautiful, professional detail that enhanced the project.

As you can see from the finished project, Jennifer has a stylish display that protects her piece from the harsh rays of our sun by using 99% UV protective glass, and presents a clean, simple way to show off her work.
