2020 Nationals on Mooney's Bay!
Call for Host Organizing Committee Members

Parents and Friends of the Rideau Canoe Club,
As many of you are aware, the Rideau Canoe Club will be hosting the 2020 Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships (a.k.a. Nationals) on August 25-29, 2020.
This will be a major community event, involving almost 1500 paddlers as well as an estimated 2000-2500 parents, coaches, officials and spectators.  Of special note in 2020, it is expected that most of Canada’s Olympic Canoe and Kayak athletes will be participating at Nationals.
The Rideau Canoe Club has established a Host Organizing Committee that will be working with Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) to host the event.  We are currently seeking additional people that would like to join the HOC as part of the lead team that will work on the event over the course of the next 14 months.   This will be a rewarding opportunity to do something fun and special for our Club, for the sport, and for the City of Ottawa.  We recognize everyone brings different skills to the table, and can find a role and function for those who would like to be involved.
The key thing at this point will be an understanding of the time commitment required:

Over this summer, we are planning to have two coordinating meetings, starting with a meeting next Tuesday, July 9th, at the Club at 7:30.  Our second summer meeting will take place on August 13th at the same time and location.  We will also work to arrange a meeting in Regina with the 2019 HOC for those who will be in Regina for the 2019 Nationals.
We will then plan to have about 6 meetings prior to Christmas, with an expectation that Committee members will be active with more specific roles and assignments – expect a commitment of 4-6 hours per month.
Following Christmas, we will move to bi-weekly meetings, and by Spring of 2020 will be meeting once a week.  We expect that your time commitment will be about 3-5 hours per week through the Spring.  In summer 2020, we will continue to meet weekly as required, but again would expect an escalation of hours required.
Finally, the big commitment for HOC members is that we will be expecting most members to be in position to take a good portion of the week of August 24-29 off from work.
Some of you have had the opportunity to experience the great emotions of the past few Nationals in Welland and Sherbrooke.  We expect the 2020 event will share the same excitement.
What we are trying to create for 2020 is something truly special   It will be an opportunity to reposition the sport of Canoe Kayak, and the National Championships, as one of Canada’s great annual sporting traditions.
We hope you are interested in joining us.
If you have questions, or would like to sign up, you can write to us via the email address, or contact one of the HOC team directly.
