Event Coordinator Wanted

Are you a highly motivated person with event management experience? Food CHI is planning the 3rd Annual Apple Fest at the Sunriver Community Gardens in September and is seeking an event coordinator for contract work. Apply by August 8, 2016. Click here for details.

Attention Farmers and anyone interested in growing food.  Food CHI will be hosting workshops this fall and winter:
1.       Pests in the Garden
2.      Soil Fertility and Management
3.      People Management on Farms

News from the SRCG

Allotment Gardens - The Garden Council has new members: co-chairs are Phoebe Dunbar and Janet Renfroe, plot registry coordinators are Patricia Whitely and Shauna Davis who assign plots, collect fees and ensure plot holders are members of Food CHI for insurance coverage.

Updates include:
  • Updated fencing is underway to detour visiting rabbits and raccoons thanks to Mel and his team
  • 2017 allotment fees are due November 15. Watch for more info in the coming months
  • For safety, the fire pits are restricted to Food CHI members only 
  • Spring came early this year and lots of cultivation and early starts are now paying dividends.
Healing Garden - Hillary Rudd and Glyse Clarkston will have a harvesting herb workshop soon. The info will be posted at the Gardens and on the Food CHI website. Garden members are invited to pick native herbs plants in moderation to use for teas or self-healing remedies. 

Grow a Row – Thanks to the District of Sooke, coordinator Paula McCormick and her team of dedicated volunteers continues to grow food for the food bank and community meal programs.

Sunriver Community Orchard - New posts have been installed and the trees were retied for support. The fruit set this year is outstanding. Glen and Kenny are usually on the orchard site every Wednesday afternoon. Drop by.

Grow a Row basket of greens & zucchini

Volunteers Welcome - Have you ever thought of helping in the Grow a Row program or general garden maintenance?  Meet new friends, enjoy contributing to a most unique community garden.  Drop by Wednesdays and Sundays, 1 to 3pm. 
Communities in Bloom Lunch hosted by Food CHI at the SRCG.  Food CHI Director Britton Jacobs-Schram and volunteer Kenny Jones tour the CIB Jurors through the Gardens and Community Orchard – July 22.
 

Transition Sooke
3rd Annual Reskilling Picnic
August 27, 10am to 4pm
At Sunriver Community Gardens. 
 
This event offers adult reskilling workshops, kids nature-related activities, potluck picnic, meditative moment and a drum and dance circle. By donation.  www.transitionsooke.org
 
 
Sooke Country Market
Saturdays from 10am to 2pm through October. The Market is located at Otter Point Road across from Eustace Road. www.sookecountrymarket.com
 
 
Sooke Night Market
Thursdays from 5 to 8pm. at the Sooke Region Museum (2070 Phillips Rd.).
 

Shirley Country Market
Sundays, 11 am-3pm

Are you a Webmaster?

Sooke Region Food CHI is seeking a person to manage the Society’s website. The volunteer webmaster would maintain the Society’s WordPress website, approximately 2-3 hours per month. Click here for details.

We are also seeking a volunteer to create and deliver the Society's seasonal newsletter, approximately 1-2 hours per month. Click here for details.
