from Sooke Region Food CHI Society

Sooke Food CHI sends greetings to all of our volunteers, partners and members who are such a vital part of our non profit organization.

District of Sooke Agricultural Plan

On May 31, the District of Sooke hosted a very productive, facilitated workshop to direct the focus of its Agricultural Plan – Sooke Food CHI was there in force. Watch the District’s website for the next draft plan - released soon – they will be looking for more feedback.

Don’t live within the municipal boundaries? No fear, the District still wants your input.

Kudos to Sooke council for making an Agricultural Plan a high priority and many thanks to the dedicated staff who make it all possible!

Farm Mentoring

Farmer2Farmer Network

With the growing season in full swing, F2F activities will pick up again in the autumn. We will look at benefits of incorporation into a co-operative or institute. Also, watch the Sooke Mirror - which has agreed to host a Farming Info Corner. Email info@sookefoodchi.ca with any suggestions about information useful to food producers - we look forward to hearing from you.

Mark the Date - September 23

In lieu of a 2012 Farm Tour, we are proud to announce a Taste of Harvest Feast at Sunriver Community Garden.

During the day we will be hosting participants of the Slow Food Cycle. Click on the logo for information about that event.

In the evening, we will be hosting a feast showcasing local produce and seafood.

Seating is limited and we are giving our Sooke Food CHI members the first opportunity to buy tickets. Adults for $10, kids under 10 for $5 and kids under 5 eat for free.

To get involved or buy a ticket contact Erika at info@sookefoodchi.ca. Watch our website for updates and exciting details!

Gleaning is a Go!

Every year, much of the fruit produced on local trees simply falls to the ground!

To prevent this waste - and bear bait - our gleaning project will pick your fruit for a share of the products. Later in the season, we will also host workshops on preparing and preserving fruits.

For information, to volunteer, or to add your tree to our picking schedule, contact Erika  info@sookefoodchi.ca.

See our website for more details as they develop.
