Farm Tour
Thanks to all those who participated in the 2015 Farm Tour. Our 2015 theme was “Hands-on Farming for a Day” and with the goal of strengthening the relationship between community members and local food producers in our region. Host farms were ALM Organic Farm, Cast Iron Farm, Eagle Paws Organics, Orveas Creek Organics, Ragley Farm, Silvercloud Farm, Saltwest Naturals, and Tugwell Creek Farm & Meadery. Huge thanks to all the volunteers and planning committee members for a job well done.
Grow a Row at SRG
Volunteers at the Sunriver Community gardens continue to grow food for the Sooke Food bank and other helping agencies this, our fifth summer. With a community grant from the District of Sooke we've been able to contract Paula McCormick for 10 hours weekly May-October to coordinate the growing , harvesting and distribution of fresh produce twice a week. A number of our allotment garden gardeners also donate surplus veggies to the Food Bank. Read more info here.
Sooke Foodshed Initiative
A coalition of food interest groups has formed in Sooke around the concept of a regional foodshed. A foodshed describes a region where food flows from the area that it is produced to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. Sooke Food CHI along with the Sooke Region Farmland Trust, Slow Food (Sooke), Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce, Transition Sooke, Sooke Farmers Club, and regional restaurateurs are members of the coalition. Other organizations are also interested in joining. To further this work, the coalition has submitted a letter of intent to Vancity for an enviroFund grant. For more info, check out the Sooke Farmland Trust site here.
