Recent Events

Community Orchard

Now that the native wetland garden is growing nicely, we have focused our attention to building an interpretive centre at the Community Orchard; we are calling it the Apple Shack.

Built with reclaimed materials and volunteer labour, the Apple Shack was recently dedicated to Maywell Wickheim; whose vision and commitment are ever-present at SRG.

Thank you Maywell - we are lucky to have you on our team.
Communities in Bloom

The Communities in Bloom judges were in Sooke recently - and Sooke Food CHI hosted a luncheon for them at the Sunriver Community Garden.

The weather was beautiful and the lunch was a community effort of fish, salad, bread and quiche. The weather was amazing and the gardens were in fine form!

Upcoming Workshop

Sunday, July 28
10am - 3pm

Glen Thelin and Clay Whitney are hosting the inaugural workshop in the Apple Shack at the Community Orchard.

Suggested donation of $25 for this full day workshop on summer pruning and fruit tree grafting. Any proceeds go towards buying more fruit trees for the orchard.

Bring gloves, pruners and a lunch - dress for the weather.
SRG on

Shaw TV

In early July, Shaw TV's Jen Muraetz created and aired this 3 minute video piece on the SunRiver Community Garden.

What's happening at Sunriver Gardens?

Crops are in and growing under the guidance of our new Grow-a-Row coordinator, Paula McCormick; they have started bringing donations to the Sooke Food Bank.

Last year, the Grow-a-Row program volunteers donated almost 2000 pounds of fresh produce - our best harvest yet.

We hope to match that effort from last year - but to do so, we need your help. Producing that much food needs many hands and volunteerism is down at the Sunriver Community Garden.

If you or someone you know has some time, please stop by Sunriver Community Garden on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm - 4pm to discuss your availability and interest in helping.

Bring your sunhat and enjoy the beauty of the garden and the satisfaction of helping your neighbours in need.

Harvest Feast
On Sunday September 22 the beautifully landscaped and expanded and Sunriver Community Garden is once again the idyllic setting for this year’s Harvest Feast. With local organic produce and locally harvested seafood prepared by local chefs in cooperation with the EMCS Culinary Arts program, this is a truly community event.

Tickets will go on sale in mid-August and we anticipate a sold out capacity of 200 guests.

Produce Update
  • Tomatoes are ripening in the greenhouse alongside the basil.
  • The small greenhouse is filling with cucumbers of all shapes and sizes.
  • New crop of cabbage is ready for the food bank.
  • Donations are now weekly and there is a high demand at the Sooke Food Bank for fresh produce.
If you have extra crop in your garden, please consider sharing the bounty!

Bring your contributions to SRG by 6:00pm on Wednesdays and I will weight and deliver them for you.
