December News

from Sooke Region Food CHI Society

A Message from the Chair:

Dear Food CHI Members,
To the many people and organizations who have donated time, energy, resources and money, thank you for helping to make 2012 such an amazing year. Read on to learn about our successes of this past year.
While the gardens are put to bed, the Food CHI Board members are busy finalizing grant reports to our current funders, and applying for new grants. This is an especially busy time as we seek funders to both sustain our current programs and to build new programs targeted at local growers and farmers.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our Annual General Meeting and to share our winter potluck dinner. We are inviting nominations for new directors to join the existing board. Watch for more information on the AGM and the Nominations via email later this month.

2012 Highlights

Community Roots: An Agricultural Plan for Sooke
Food CHI is proud to have been a part of this – thanks to the District of Sooke for creating this plan with such an open process. We look forward to continuing to work with Sooke to implement the plan.
As with many non-profit organizations, Food CHI is looking for ways to support our own programs through fundraising. This year, we tried a Harvest Feast as a fundraiser. In addition to being an amazing showcase of local food, in a beautiful setting, the feast raised about $2000, which we will use towards farmer support in 2013.
Food Donations
The Fruit Tree Project volunteers collected nearly 2000 pounds of fruit.
Sunriver Garden likewise grew & donated over 2000 pounds of produce. All donations were distributed to the food bank, meal programs, the crisis centre and the transition house.
Guest speaker
In October, Mavis Alvarez spoke about the Cuban experience of co-operative farming. To learn more about this forced experiment with post-carbon food production: Power of Community

2013 Focus

AGM – Mark the Date
On Monday, January 28, 2013, we will be hosting our AGM at the Sooke Harbour House Potlatch Room. The agenda will be sent out in December – and, as usual, the meeting will be hosted as a potluck dinner. Nominations to the Board of Directors can be forwarded to info@sookefoodchi.ca.
Farmer Support
Food CHI has recently invited several local farmers to provide input and feedback to our farm support programs. We look forward to further developing effective strategies to support a growing regional industry: farming.

The Farmer Advisory Committee has pulled together numerous action items for the coming year and will work with Food CHI to see these implemented and further strengthen our farming community through connection, education and skill sharing. Watch our website for further information.
