Sooke Food CHI sends greetings to all of our volunteers, partners and members who are such a vital part of our non profit organization.

District of Sooke Agricultural Plan

On August 27, the District of Sooke's Land Use Committee received the second draft of Sooke's Agricultural Plan.

The LUC welcomed comments from citizens in the gallery and forwarded the plan to Sooke Council. You can find the plan on the District's website

We are grateful to Sooke's mayor, council and staff for all of their hard work. We look forward to supporting Sooke as it works towards implementing the new plan.
Farm Mentoring

Farmer2Farmer Network

Only a few weeks left for the Sooke Country Market. Many Farmer 2 Farmer participants are at Otter Point and Sooke Road every Saturday from 10am to 2pm through October.

Go to the F2F page on the website to review the final report and recommendations from last winter's F2F project.

We hope to pick up some F2F momentum again this autumn. Email info@sookefoodchi.ca with any suggestions about information useful to food producers - we look forward to hearing from you.

FTP Yellow Plums

Fruit Tree Project!

Well over 500 pounds of fruit has already been harvested and distributed througout the community - thanks to the Sooke Region Fruit Tree Project!

Fruit tree owners and volunteer pickers are responding to the recent media in the Sooke Mirror and Sooke Voice News. We will pick all the fruit we can - but it remains a volunteer based project so may not be able to get to all the trees.

So far, donations have gone to the Food Bank, church meal programs, crisis centre, and EMCS culinary arts program - to name a few.

For information, to volunteer, or to add your tree to our picking schedule, contact info@sookefoodchi.ca.

What's happening at Sunriver Gardens?

Harvest, harvest, harvest and more harvest!

When you walk through the gates at Sunriver Gardens (SRG), it is hard to know who else is on site because the plants are so tall and so full.

Our Community Garden...
  • volunteer numbers continue to grow & we enjoy meeting under the gazebo for tea
  • squash patches are so deep it feels like diving to harvest
  • new greenhouse is bursting with tomato plants
The Orchard at Sunriver Gardens has produced fruit for the harvest as well.Glen harvests first applesThese first apples will be used in a fruit crumble desert for the Harvest Feast on Sept 23.

Sundays and Wednesdays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm are still the days when volunteers are greeted by Mara - our volunteer outreach worker. Emily is also on site - providing the leadership and knowledge to grow food for the community.

Sooke Slow Food Cycle 2012!

Our friends at Sooke Transition Town and the Juan de Fuca Cycling Coalition will be hosting the Sooke Slow Food Cycle. On September 23, from 10am - 4pm, Edward Milne Community School will be host to a sustainability expo and market.
